Title: help with virtual memory and stuff
Post by: envaluecrypto on March 13, 2017, 11:37:04 PM
Hi, sorry for bothering you good people, I have a problem.. Recently made the switch from ethOS to Windows, due to low hashrates on ethOS. Problem is I have a 32gb SSD and windows doesn't let me (ofc) allocate 16gb virtual memory as there's not enough space.. Can i just put another HDD and then allocate it there ? (Will the miner work, DAG and stuff I don't have knowledge of) or must I cash out a bigger SSD

I know it would work but will it work if I add a secondary hdd and not buy a bigger ssd

Yeah, no problems at all.

Virtual memory is around from way more than SSD and it always worked.
I've mined for quite some time with old HDD with 32Gb of virtual memory and I didn't notice any difference between SSD or HDD

What windows you have? I assume it's 7 or 10. I made a google search: windows page file on separate disk
One of the results shows the images what to set for Win7: https://superuser.com/questions/237813/how-can-i-move-the-page-file-to-another-physical-disk-location
There's a similar result for Win10 too if that's your OS: http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-move-page-file-in-windows-10-to-another-disk/

I hope that this is what you needed. Good luck.

How many gpus you have because if you have just 2 or 3 you don't even need to adjust the VM leave it as it is i tried it with 2 gpus the miner works fine without adjusting virtual memory unless you have more than 3 cards you sure need to go for a larger hdd or ssd
You can get a cheap 80gb hdd used or something , it doesn't differ what type the drive is.

I found those too, but just wanted to post in this forum, maybe someone has experience with it, if miner gets confused or something it being on a different disk.
Will try surely. Thanks for the help

you can have a virtual mem running on another ssd , that is can not be a problem, and its working fine, just follow that guide what NeuroticFish posted already :
http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-move-page-file-in-windows-10-to-another-disk/ (http://winaero.com/blog/how-to-move-page-file-in-windows-10-to-another-disk/)
Your mining software , windows and all another software on that pc will be working just fine.
