Title: Electrum stole my money.
Post by: arnage on March 14, 2017, 01:37:15 AM
Approximately two weeks ago I sent 0.000142 BTC, and still have not received.

I probably shouldn't respond to such an uninformed post but...

1. Did you just rebroadcast this transaction?

That looks like it was received within the last 12 hours to me... not exactly 2 weeks ago...

B. Regardless of when you sent the transaction, your fee is ridiculously low

Quote
Fee per byte   5.015 sat/B

5 satoshi's per byte???  ::)

Next time, you might want to try going here: https://bitcoinfees.21.co/ and checking what the current average for a quick confirmation is... for the record... it is currently around 40x what you paid :P

Lastly, Electrum didn't "steal" your money... your transaction is just waiting to be confirmed. While you wait for your ludicrously low fee transaction to confirm, you might like to go and do some reading on how Bitcoin works... Google should be able to assist.

Be sure to also download the latest version of Electrum which uses Dynamic Fees by default to prevent sending low fees like this.

First of all welcome to bitcoin.
I think it is great that you are trying it out and that you have chosen Electrum. :-)

At the moment the blocks are full and thus transactions with higher fees get prioritized.
Because your fee is low chances are slim that it will be included in a block any time soon if at all.

But rest assure that the bitcoins are not gone.
Should the transaction not confirm within a few days the transaction will be removed from the mempool (where all the not included transaction wait to be included).
Should this happen then the bitcoins will be spendable again from their original addresses.

If you have any more question please don't hesitate to ask them.
Bitcoin is great once you start to understand how it works.

Yep, its a fee thing most likely.  I usually pay slightly above the "norm" set by Electrum.  My transactions are much larger than this thread discusses above, and I don't mind the extra fee to get everything through smoothly.  I want "happy" on both sides of the transaction.

Here's what's written on the site: https://blockchain.info/tx/8360bdb82845df96d92f38d4d4a135ca02c7fee923efb3ca10503167437818ed:

You are too high opinion of yourself, do not consider others more stupid than yourself.
I repeat once more that I paid 2 weeks ago and about the fee - it was installed by Electrum, not by me.

Your tx still exists on some nodes:

What probably happened: your transaction was broadcasted, accepted by blockchain.info's node, but later removed because the chance of getting confirmed with a low fee was near to 0.
I do agree that for a new user, bitcoin fees are confusing, and some wallets could offer a bit more assistance to new users so they add appropriate fees.
That being said: your money is not gone, as long as the transaction isn't confirmed, it's technically still yours. As soon as most of the other nodes drop your transaction, it will re-appear in your electrum balance. Either that, or the transaction will get confirmed...

There is no theft here you just transferred an amount half the transaction one fee with that size, using a wallet and then saying it chose for you is not the way. you should have learned first about such things before trying to send out a few cents.

It's like a paid pizza delivery, you can't expect the delivery man to give you the pizza and just take only the half of his tip? you are asking for free pizza and some lol.

I sent money two weeks ago through Electrum and did not receive it. It is a fact.

If you took the time to do some research on how the Bitcoin network works... you might also find that blockchain.info isn't the only blockchain explorer in operation:

https://blockexplorer.com/tx/8360bdb82845df96d92f38d4d4a135ca02c7fee923efb3ca10503167437818ed

Just because blockchain.info has chosen to drop the transaction, it does not mean that it has been removed from the mempool... blockchain.info is not THE blockchain. We can also see from those other explorers, that yes, it does appear that you initially sent your transaction a number (approximately 9) of days ago:

Quote
First seen: Sunday, March 5th 2017, 0:11:02 +13:00
Relay time: Tuesday, March 14th 2017, 0:10:02 +13:00

So, there are nodes still broadcasting your transaction, so you never know, there is a possibility your transaction will eventually confirm... if not, it should eventually get dropped altogether and you'll be able to to resend a transaction with a more "attractive" fee.

You are too high opinion of yourself, do not consider others more stupid than yourself.
I repeat once more that I paid 2 weeks ago and about the fee - it was installed by Electrum, not by me.
For the record, I don't consider others more stupid... and I certainly didn't imply you were. What I said was your post was "uninformed"... there is a difference between stupidity and ignorance.

Whatever your thoughts on Electrum are, the real reason your transaction is stuck in limbo is because of the low fee. It happens all the time to lots of people using lots of different wallets. It isn't a flaw in Electrum, so much as the way people use Electrum (or any other wallet).

Perhaps this will help you be more "informed": https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1802212.0

Thank you for your explanation, I think that you are right and someday in a year or two ;D my BTC will appear in one of my wallets...
