If you tell someone what your public address is, s/he can see your transactions on the network. That's why it's a good idea to generate lots of different addresses for different uses (or even every time you receive coins). The address that every transaction is sent to as well as the amount that is sent is 100% public.
Since there is no requirement that a name (or other identifying information) be associated with a bitcoin address, it is possible to maintain anonymity while using bitcoin, but depending on who you are trying to keep the identity hidden from, ensuring such anonymity requires significant effort. Plus all the wallet transfer information is always online and someone could figure out how much you have in your wallet from that.
