they are pretty terrible with their communication, if they were trying anything they'd be doing the worst job ever

for instance when the market crashed mt gox wrote a press release they stated 'we are confident that this panic sell will be temporarily and that bitcoin will rise again', in your opinion is this form of public relations intended to create market price manipulation

Unprofessional; yes. Manipulation; no.

its evidential of public opinon though to a degree

I assumed that the topic is whether or not Mt. Gox is manipulating (or attempting to manipulate) the price through the statements they make. I apologize if the topic is about public perception instead.

buy lots of coins at $150; announce 20,000 new signups per day; wait for the price to reach 250; sell lots of coins; close down the shop for a day to "cool off the price"; buy lots of coins at $50; rinse repeat.

public relations? nah. manipulation? quite possible.
