How do Casascius coins work? Are they basically paper wallets that you can then import into your wallet?

Yepp

Inside the coin there is a paper-wallet code. You can see parts of it trough a "peeping hole"

To get to the adress, you need to tear off a sticker that will be partially destroyed so that you cannot reseal it without it beeing obvious that it has been opened.

The Bitcoin address is visible.

The private key is hidden behind an hologram.
