Title: Should I use PCI-e riser with power in it?
Post by: pornluver on March 15, 2017, 06:42:28 PM
It seems that there are several kind of PCI-e riser.

Some have sata power, some have this power.

I do not understand.

I thought power goes from power supply straight to the card. Why should the PCI-e riser have power by itself? It doesn't make sense to me.

Which one should I use and what's the plus and minus?

The vga cards are pulling power straight from the psu , but on the same time also from the pcie slot.

use only powered usb risers

Why does it take power from pcie if it can take power from PSU straight?

What happen if I use unpowered riser?

The point of using a powered riser is to supply directly the power to the GPU, instead of letting the mobo feeding power to your GPU through the riser.
While i never had issues running with unpowered riser in the old days (Bitcoin, litecoin mining with 5850 and 7950), i strongly recommand you to use only powered risers, especially if you are mining with the RX radeon series, which are known for drawing quite a lot of power through the pcie.

just wait until sata connector burned, if you are using RX series GPUs
