Title: Should I use PCI-e riser with power in it? Post by: pornluver on March 15, 2017, 06:42:28 PM It seems that there are several kind of PCI-e riser.
Some have sata power, some have this power. I do not understand. I thought power goes from power supply straight to the card. Why should the PCI-e riser have power by itself? It doesn't make sense to me. Which one should I use and what's the plus and minus? Title: Re: Should I use PCI-e riser with power in it? The vga cards are pulling power straight from the psu , but on the same time also from the pcie slot. use only powered usb risers Title: Re: Should I use PCI-e riser with power in it? What happen if I use unpowered riser? The point of using a powered riser is to supply directly the power to the GPU, instead of letting the mobo feeding power to your GPU through the riser. While i never had issues running with unpowered riser in the old days (Bitcoin, litecoin mining with 5850 and 7950), i strongly recommand you to use only powered risers, especially if you are mining with the RX radeon series, which are known for drawing quite a lot of power through the pcie.
