Title: How many cryptocurrencies do you invest in?
Post by: ulhaq on March 22, 2017, 02:16:56 PM
On the one hand, I would like to diversify due to volatility, but on the other hand, how many of these are actually going to survive? Eventually are we going to have 1 cryptocurrency that is fast, secure, anonymous, can handle smart contracts, and so on, and there will be no reason to use anything else?

Right now I am only interested in bitcoin but I am planning to go to some trading site so,
I might buy some alt-coin hope that I can get some decent profit by doing it.

Very hard to predict which coins might survive in future. I don't think we will end up using just a single coin, we are entering into a future where we will get use many tokens/coins which will offer various functions than just store value. It can be ownership, dividends or for other functions. I think it best to get into Dapp tokens such as ICN, SNGLS, GOLEM, DCT, ETH, ETC and many more. Diversify and book profits when you get some good returns.

I think this is a rhetorical question. U can buy some alt ( for expample ETH) on 100% of the deposit and forgot about risk diversification , than sell all u coins when this alt make x2 or more if u have steel balls ;D. Or u can buy 10 shicoins on 10% of u deposit and look how someone grow and someone down, mb after 2-3 month u can make some profit or no) I think that the major thing why u must buy or sell some shitcoins - is Chart, and if chart tell u that this coin make x2 after 2-3 weeks - u must buy it, and if u see 2 or more chart where shitcoin on the bottom u can buy all of them) For example 3 weeks ago 80% of alts stay at the bottom and if u buy it, u now you would be rich ;D

I would wait out simply because the price of all the major alt coins have touched the all time high valuation and i am sure i wanted to risk anything now with it,i would really hold out and let the prices settle and then i would make a decision on what to do next ,until then i will stick with bitcoin.

Yes we had that 1 crypto currency that you had mentioned already that is fast, secure and anonymous. But it's up to you on how you are going to see those coins survive, I suggest that just go with the most popular coins and has an history of pump and dump. People will pump that again when the price is dump.

I wish to invest $100 each in top 100.

This is what I'm wishing to do too.

How is this a rhetorical question? The majority of ppl on this sub-forum trade. So everyone is already making decisions on it.

I am not sure if you are being serious, but this is a terrible idea. Look at the performance of the index on http://alt19.com/. It uses a similar methodology as you and it has lost about 95% of its value.

How many cryptocurrencies do you invest in?

5-7.

diversification is everything when it comes to investing, period. for people relying on (or believing) in bitcoin alone is foolish... i've used bitcoin profits to buy/hedge other alt's, and have had insane returns doing so. i always sell a % when a pump happens to recoup principle, then reinvest into something else. some alt's i'm long term, others i play by ear.

I currently have 2.

If I was investing properly in the crypto space and not just playing around with a bit of spare change I would probably have at least 20, and some of that would be small amounts of money in tiny market cap cryptos in the hope one of them goes up 1000x.

Investing in ETH and XMR is enough for me. Active development and interesting technology. DASH is a marketing joke, Zcash based on "trusted setup".

XMR and ETH are here to stay, others come and go (and usually take your money with them).

It is easy to tell coins that are going to survive, coinmarketcap and coingecko is still the best guides on coins that are likely to survive because of comunity support and trading volume,I have stakes on 20 coins on the top 40 coins in the coinmarketcap..

No we will not have one currency. We dont have one today either. With crypto we will have 1000 times more currencies as today or more.

For now only 2, but usually the number is between 2-5. And I try not to go with coins at the bottom, I know profit their could be 10x or more but I stick with the upper portion and try to rely on the regular pump and dump and get the small percentage of profit each time. I feel it is less risky.

You are not looking at it correctly. Scroll to the bottom and click on alt indices in the dropdown. Take a look at the graph and you will see what I mean. A few years ago the vast majority of the cryptocurrencies are not even existing today. The previous person wanted to invest $100 in 100 cryptocurrencies. That is very similar to the altcoin index. Yes, the ones that now exist are doing well. It is called survivorship bias, and a few years ago ppl did not know what would be existing now, just as now no one knows what will exist in the future.

Currently 2, in about a month that will be 3, because I don't have much time to research all the coins out there I have to be selective.
So for now EnergyCoin and GameCredits, in about a month MobileGo will the 3rd

Fuck that, profit is never guaranteed, and it's not like anyone has any inside info on cryptocurrencies.

OP, you could lose your shirt trading altcoins.  There's no predicting what they're going to do and the volatility is insane.  It's even insane for bitcoin itself.  The degenerates over in the gambling section will always tell you this:  Don't gamble what you can't afford to lose, and that holds true for investing in altcoins.  If I could give you any decent advice, it would be to stay away from the shittiest shitcoins, which are the ones that trade for a few satoshis each on places like Yobit.  The market is extremely thin, and you'll have a very hard time getting the prices you want.  Stick to the bigger ones if you must trade.  And don't listen to anyone on this forum, including me.  :)

Two.  I hold most of my money in Bitcoin, then I switch a little bit into whichever be altcoin I think has potential to rise significantly in the near future.  I don't want to risk my holdings too much by putting a lot into different shitcoins.

75% BTC, 1-2 strong alts to hold, and no more than 4-5 alts to trade daily.
I don't like to do more than this, as you start losing control (or investing too much time).

I'm watching new ICO's very close. I buy and sell almost all of them. I played with Pivx, Ark, Incent, Trust, Edg, Waves, Komodo. There are too many new ICO's out there. Bittrex list them very quick and we can trade it right after ICO ends. I don't want to hold too many coins at the same time, most of the time I buy a coin and sell it to buy another one. If it reaches my target price I sell without think twice. Putting a target price for sale is the key factor here.

You can't go wrong mirroring what's happening on Poloniex.  That's a good suite of coins.  It's too hard to just look at CMC and see the obscure ones that go up 300% and think you can find them ahead of time.  Reading the annoucement thread is good but it takes a lot of time to know what's really going on.  If you just want to make money, stick to Poloniex coins, but if you want to use your heart, have fun and read up on what people are developing.  I'm trying to do both.

Looks too me that is too much. I agree with your that you need to down. Diversification is good, but I suggest like to have 5-6 coins only. And only invest on coins that has a good developer to back it up and also look at the price and trading volume as well. I think with 20 coins, its hard to monitor every coin in your portfolio.

Hard to control, Every time the price possible to get dump, hard to store on the safe place. I don't investing on a lot of the kind of currencies. It just give me another risk about my money. just investing on some which have a lot of the potential.

I've went through many transitions over time.
I started with BitCoin, then LiteCoin, a bit later to make my highest profit ever as a joke from DogeCoin - I focused on them for several weeks.

Right now I have shifted into Monero, Eth and BitShares.

Unfortunately some of the coins I was interested in did not succeed, but in the grand scheme you have to give something to receive.

If crypto currency gets widely accepted, there are going to be more than one coin existing in the market. Different coins have different features which different people might like. Currently focusing on few coins, mainly BTC, LTC, UNO, NXT.

Man, if you're going to diversify, do it with other assets besides crypto.  I think it's nice to have a little basket of bitcoin and assorted altcoins, but nothing in crypto is guaranteed.  You need to be in the stock market AND have cash reserves.  And probably some precious metals and bonds thrown into the mix.  That would be some true diversification.

Pick good crypto, not shit coins.  Stuff like LTC and the like.  Don't listen to these balloon heads on this forum telling you to buy their pet shit coin.  That's a sure way to lose money.

I hold some $10-$50 worth of most cheap alts that are available on poloniex. It's my ticket to becoming a millionaire. Right now the biggest asset I won is 300 000 siacoin. BTC and ETH is a good way to win +50% or even double your money, but that won't change my life, so I go for the gamble with alts.

I think ethereum and bitcoin is one of the good investment and for sure the price of this coin will increase more in the future. I think this two can change your life if you have hundreds of bitcoin and ethereum for sure you will become rich after few years of holding. Many peple as of now investing in bitcoin and ethereum so the price is continously increasing so its better buy bitcoin and ethereum and hold it to make a lot of profit.

From now my investment were bitcoin, ethereum, footballcoin and Torcoin only, I choose this coins because I believe that this coin had a high potential to increase their value in the market. However, I just want to take the risk of investment because I just want to see how long this coins survive.

On the one hand, I would like to diversify due to volatility, but on the other hand, how many of these are actually going to survive? Eventually are we going to have 1 cryptocurrency that is fast, secure, anonymous, can handle smart contracts, and so on, and there will be no reason to use anything else?
That may happen but we must not count on that to happen anytime soon, so I think we are going to have a basket of cryptocurrencies that perform different functions depending on the needs of the user, there will be a top coins for every niche and bitcoin will remain on top as the De facto gold of cryptocurrencies for a very long time.

Question which one will survive deserves logical answer, those who have enough funds for further development..Decentralized and anonymous transactions. Everything else can be upgraded on this base if need exist. We need an alternative to POW, POS is not good enough. Fast and usable coins with small chains..

I think if you invest in the top 10 PoW coins, it is more likely to succeed.

Honestly diversification and subsequently 'forgetting' about your investments is your best bet in crypto's. I'd say invest in approx. 10-15 promising coins or ICO's (depending on your risk profile) and just don't touch them for a year or so.

This is actually a good plan. imagine forgetting about having 5000 btc you bought at $0.10 before, then you learn that it's $2700 today =)

I only invested in Bitcoins and in LTC (a while ago).
Bitcoin, is going to survive the reason it is the first decentralized currency and the first crypto-currency and all that its features.
It depends on you how many crypto-currencies you adopt because there is no limit on adopting.
