Title: I used RX 480 and got only 24MB/s rate
Post by: pornluver on March 24, 2017, 11:44:46 AM
Whattomine.com says I should be getting 29MB/s rate.

Some says they can get 30MB/s rate.

What did I do wrong?

you need moded bios for 30+mhs

with  msi  afterburner  some rx 480's with 8gb will do 29-30mh for eth

and smOS which I use is good

All my rx 480's 8gb  do 26.1 - 26.2 or so  with  lower power settings.  each rig has 2 cards

if I did

1100
2222
6
vs

999
2222
0
I would get up to  28-29  but hotter and more power

If you wanna reach 30MHash you should lower your timings and edit bios.

Without doing that you can overclock a little bit the memory and obtain better results like 28Mhash.
You can do it with MSI afterburner or Wattool on windows, otherwise you can also simpleminingOS that integrates an oC tool

Can I do it with wattman?

This article says I need to turn clock memory to 9 GHz. However, it doesn't tell me how

Quote
Moving to overclocking, the only thing we need to do is increase the video memory to the maximum and in this case this means 9 GHz (the card might be able to handle more, but the overclocking software or the driver is apparently capped at 9 GHz max). With the video memory at 9 GHz the RX 480 is capable of delivering about 28 MHS hashrate for mining Ethereum. It is highly possible that even higher hashrate could be achieved if you manage to get past the 9 GHz limit for the video memory, but for the moment AMD’s WattMan software or the Asus tool that we used do not currently allow for more. With the memory overclocked the power usage is increased with just about 7-8 Watt at the wall, so definitely worth overclocking it for mining Ethereum. We were a bit disappointed by the lack of overclockability headroom of the GPU that was able to get just about 1340 MHz with the stock voltage. Of course no point in overclocking it for Ethereum mining, in fact you might want to actually downclock it to get better power efficiency if mining only Ethereum.

2 things are required to achieve ~30mh on an RX480

  • Edit Memory Timings in Bios
  • OC Memory to 2150

If you OC the memory to 2150mhz without editing the timings you'll get yourself about 26-28MH

If you OC the memory to 2250mhz (9000 effective) you'll be able to achieve close to the same thing but many cards will not OC the memory this high.

It's better/safer to go with a lower clock speed and tighter memory timings in bios. It uses less power as well.

In Summary, You need to mod the bios, have someone mod your bios or find someone who has already modded the bios on the exact card that you have and is making it available for download.

You'll need to overclock a lot for 30 MH/s. But 28 MH/s, that is achievable easily by even Claymore miner's integrated overclocking options. You're using his miner, right? If so, check out the FAQ document.

However, if you pay for your electricity, personally I'd prefer stable 26.5 MH/s with undervolting.

I am in trouble here. It seems that I can overclock memory and tell my fan to go 100%. Temperature drops from 84 degree celcius to 70 degree celcius.

I tried to overclock the whole card with msi afterburner and now the computer don't run anymore.

The PSU already blow up once.

So maybe the card is already slightly problematic.

But now it won't run anymore I have no idea what to do. To turn the system back to the way it used to be I would need to you know, run that msi afterburner. For that to work I need the computer to run. It doesn't.

I think I did overclock the memory to 2250mhz (9000 effective) . What do you mean by 2250 is 9000 effective?

It does hit 28 MH/s. Good enough for me.

Effective memory rate is frequency*4.. But it's not really important.
Afterburn configurations gets erased after every reboot, so this is not the problem

So I should increase memory clock memory and then update bios. How do I update bios?

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1584617.new#new This looks very interesting. Lower power consumption and yet higher hash rate.

There's a bunch of .rom files. I do not know which one to use.

you need to use a modded bios with the exact bios version number what you have on your card. If you start flashing random downloaded bioses , you going to brick your card . warranty not covering the modded  bios failure :)

...if you find it difficult, try out only the Claymore's miner overclocking.

Set -mclock and -cclock at the command line.

I overclocked my memory clock.

I got 27.8 MH/s and everything is stable.

However, I can no longer run nicehash miner.

Basically the system always crash everytime I tried other algorithm. I have no idea whether this will cause any permanent damage to my card, motherboard or anything.

It seems that overclocking is not a good idea if I wanna do multi algo switching. I got to do ethash all the way.

Am I correct here?

What about custom rom? Do all RX 480 have the same custom rom or do I need to search for exact one that match my card? How do I know the exact type of RX 480 for my card?

What clocks you set?

Nicehashminer is is basically a errors generator, many algos ended with to BSOD.

use modding bios
you can go 30-34mh/s for 120w/ card (72w for cpu 45w for memory)

What is modding bios?

How do I know that a bios will match my card? Is there a serial number or something?

...just try one thing : search rx480 mod bios eth on google maybe .......!!!!!!!?????

Obviously I've tried that and brick my card.

After unbrick it I realize that many of those mod bios are not compatible with my card. The question is, what should I match to ensure that the bios match my card before I flash a new bios.

Have you tried?

In fact, I went one step further.

I check my current bios and I saw a number

https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?did=1002-67DF-174B-E347

1002 is vendor id
67DF is device id
174b is sub vendor id
e347 is vendor id

Guess what?

BIOS with that exact same number will brick the card.

I have a Sapphire RX 480 8GB Nitro + OC which runs at 1342 MHz (boost speed)
I copied the bios and edited the memory straps 1750 -> 2000.
With that I am getting about 28.1 MH/s (instead of 24)
The thing is, if I increase the memory speed to 2250 Mhz (or lower the core as well), that has no effect and the speed stays  at 28 MH/s.
really weird.. This happens on all of the cards I own..

Any ideas ?

I am sure you have samsung memory cards.
There is this guy who runs memory at 2080 and core at 1125 or 1150 with 910mV and gets 29.3+ on these cards you have.
You need to find optimal settings. It's not just one or two parameters.

And ofcourse his mod is good for eth only, crashes bSod on dual if you try to increase memory a bit more.

to know your memory use gpu-z end check if you have hynix elpidia or samsung ram that's all after you take the rom for your memory

get polaris bios editor, take your original rom with ati flash, save it.
Open it with polaris and strap the timing memory 1725 to 2000Mhz  (you copy the value of the 1725 timing ram on each line to 2000mhz sry for my english ^^ ) and flash your card with the new bios

Remember to back up the original BIOS before than flashing anything!
You can find some BIOS online, but it's still better to have a copy of your own

awesome, only replaced 2000 straps with 1750, i'm getting 2-3 mh/s  more per card when dual mining DCR, temperatures also much better

settings:
5x480 nitro OC+
core 1100  , 1000mv
memory 2100, 1000mv
-dcri 35

eth - 135 mhs / dcr-4700 mhs

980w from wall - this is little bit to much because i have Corsair RM1000x

which settings should I change to get lower energy consumption from wall?

You got to update the bios

Dowload polaris editor and atiwinflash

Then make sure you know how to switch to silent bios and via versa in your card.

Back up BOTH of your bios.

Then reply to this thread for your next lesson.
