Hi All,

Newbie here. I would like to ask how can I mine bitcoin using my rpi3 using a 5v 2.1amp usb port to power my rpi and usb minerBTC. Is this possible?
Also If I use usb hub, is it enough to use 5v usb port to power my hub?

Another question is where can I buy usb miners / block erupters? Is gekkoscience the ideal usb miners this days?

Note: I am fully aware that it will cost me more than what I gain. I just want to make one. :)

Hi!

I have a pi3 too with a 2.5A power supply (previously used a 1A one) and what I felt is that just the pi itself uses around 0.6-0.8A when used. I'm not sure about which USB miner you want but you only have around 1Amps from a 2A power supply. Also please note that the voltage will drop when you're putting load onto the charger. I'd recommend looking for a miner that eats 1A at max.

Would that very easy by using a step up and step down module controlled by a voltage regulator connected to the Pi3? It seems that everyone is racing to create something that every tech should know that most machines never work that they were intended to due the human error and customers misunderstanding. Since the pi is pretty much a low voltage object, it stands to say your cost would come down. This is just food for thought. I have hundreds of these boards as I into recycling boards.  

Try using the Beaglebone black or Cubieboard that are superior to Pi3. Boards are the mainstay of mining along with the heat rating. when you increase in wattage more heat. You will findout that if you enclose your board. Not to mention on your USB, I would recommend that you change you ports to 3.0 instead of the two for the future as the 2.0 will be phased out.

I will be honest with you : USB miners are not profitable anymore, since a long time, either they are ran on common computers or on a Raspberry Pi. So I suggest you to buy no USB miner at all, since you will never break even. That would be wasted money.

Well you could make but not from bitcoin directly. You can still make money with altcoins but sadly not with the SHA256 ones because of the ASICS on the market. And as for SHA it's true that you could try but it certainly would be a waste. A raspi as hub for your usb miners can be done easily.
ROI depends, on the future price and costs to start. 
GPU altcoin mining will be a better choice for the moment.

Have a look at sidehack's usb miners. They seem like the only modern/up to date USB miners.
Don't bother with an erupter unless you're getting one for novelty value, you'd be lucky to find a satoshi per year  :D

The block erupter is just a USB miner. It's really old and the only reason to buy one is as a museum piece ;)
