If BU splits, the odds are higher that Core would make Bitmain's equipment incompatible with Bitcoin as opposed to Bitmain freezing out half of their customer base. Even attempting to do such a thing would freeze their sales from an unknown part of their customer base and likely drive away many more due to extreme lack of impartiality and unprofessionalism.

BU doesn't involve any change to PoW though - and I doubt that any proposal to change the PoW will ever get significant support from miners. And yes Bitmain will take winning side. Even joining BU is just for profits and they aren't risking much there. Shutting down customers would be a bad idea. This would just jack up prices of used AntMiners. I'm also 100% certain that the S9/T9/R4 at least have already updated the controller software to support BU *IF* it actually DID require such a change, since AntPool has decided to support BU.
