Title: EU summons Filipino envoy to explain Duterte tirade
Post by: Kemarit on March 29, 2017, 11:13:38 AM
MANILA, Philippines — The European Union on Monday summoned a Philippine envoy to explain an expletive-laden tirade by President Rodrigo Duterte, who threatened to hang EU officials for opposing his efforts to re-impose the death penalty.

The EU's external action service, the equivalent of a foreign office, said it hauled Charge d'Affaires Alan Deniega in to its Brussels headquarters to provide "an explanation for the recent, unacceptable comments of President Duterte."

The move highlights growing European exasperation with the president. Earlier, the EU denied his allegations that it proposed solving the Philippines' drug problem by creating treatment clinics where illegal drugs such as methamphetamine or cocaine would be dispensed.

The EU Delegation to the Philippines issued a statement saying it has not "suggested, discussed, proposed or considered the use of any substitution drugs when treating addiction to methamphetamine ... or any other drug addiction in the Philippines." It did not mention Duterte by name.

Duterte, who has lashed out at the EU repeatedly for raising human rights concerns over his deadly crackdown on illegal drugs, said in a speech Friday the EU had proposed a "health-based solution" to the drug problem that involved dispensing methampetamine, locally known as shabu, cocaine or heroin.

He branded the supposed EU proposal a "government-sponsored idiotic exercise."

This guy was the original Trump, I just didn't see it because I was looking at the actual Trump. Instead of tweeting, Duerte actually says the crazy shit out loud, at the podium, in front of everyone.

But seriously, he is walking a very fine line. His actions are clearly illegal, but his statements are going to be his downfall. He's too boastful about the killings, too callous in the application. He knows regular folks are getting caught up in this. He's not really solving the problem, just treating the symptoms.

But I see sentiment is shifting enough (he seemed to have a following similar to Trump, devoted fans that can perceive no wrong). Parliament is making moves seemingly to hold him accountable. But, it seems pretty corrupt over there politically, it will be easy for him to hinder the effort in that political climate.

LOL. Except for the hair maybe you can't distinguished the real "Trump". Both Trump and Duterte are seen to promise to being about changes. It is for this reason they were elected. However, It seems to me that Duterte support has been diminishing in the Philippines, there have been talks on coup to replace him because he is involving himself in difficult and problematic situation. (EJK, war of drugs).

Maybe you or somebody you know can make a video compilation of these said Trump-like incidents and translate it with voice overs(THE BEST!) or subtitles(AT THE VERY LEAST!) with accuracy in what he is saying and post it on youtube.
I am sure you will get a million hits because what is he is doing there with those murders and justifying it as a war on drugs are against humanitarian rights of the free world.

This is what his fanatics can't wrap their heads around. You don't have to be rude when facing criticism. The gullible see it as a sign of strength apparently, probably the reason why the populists are having their time on the limelight. Unfortunate for us, his subordinates are starting to act the same way now, just like that assistant secretary from the social department telling EU parliament to just go fap to their child porn. (Ironic since it's her department that should be handling victims.)

IMHO though his downfall could come not from his words but his increasing authoritarianism and kowtowing to China. Right now his people in Congress are cooking up a way to stop elections in the smallest administrative unit and allow him to appoint people instead. There are people now starting to see the danger of that. The whole mess with China sending a survey ship east of the country is also not helping, considering China don't have a favorable view here. In fact, public sentiment against China has been simmering for a few years now, we just don't have massive protests like Vietnam since the more outspoken groups here seem to sympathize with China.

I would side with Duterte here. The president is imposing the death penalty in his own country, and that too with good intentions. I don't understand why the European Union is bothered so much. Can't they mind their own business and STFU? What a bunch of pansies these EU guys are?

Any death threat or death penalty cannot be justified, it's 21st century and we still look for reasons to make killing one another look better than it is.
Perhaps, it will work well eventually, like in Chile, but provided this guy really knows what he's doing. Again, time will tell... :-\

Death penalty is perfectly justified against criminals who indulge in pedophilia, rape and murder. It acts as an effective deterrent to violent crime. Look at countries such as South Africa, where death penalty have been repealed recently. The crime rate is sharply up and the people are feeling unsafe.

EU has no right to dictate other countries. EU should solve its problems first before talking about other problems outside its territory.

Even though am not really a fan of how Duterte is handling the drug problems in his country, I think the EU should just mind their own business and stop interfering in the affairs of the Philippines, Obviously the people of the Philippines really like what their President and he doesn't have to answer to the EU on whether or not he will bring back the death penalty. I am sure the EU would have already intervened with military force if the Philippines has some raw commodity they may want to exploit.

That's interesting, so this is how tough and clear President Filipin is trying to put in place the European Union and even America with its past president. Although it is still unknown how he will develop relations with Trump.

I think duterte and trump would be a perfect fit for each other. Though i agree that what the philippine president did was not very classy for a national leader, i think the eu is overextending their hands here. There are a lot more things to focus on within their union and i don't think they should be minding the philippines' affairs

No country in the world has conquered crime through the death penalty. Duterte idiot. He does not understand the diplomatic etiquette. This dictator is bad to end his life, but his fate does not interest me. I feel sorry for ordinary Filipinos who will suffer in the first place.

This is what I talking for.
EU have no rights to dictate others country and I didn't shocked that United Kingdom will exit on the European Union because of their behavior.

I don't see this as dictating. They were reminding us of our responsibilities to honor agreements we have signed. They were reminding us of consequence should we fail.

As for Brexit, it has more to do with the immigrant crisis. It was UK, America and Russia that fucked up Iraq and Syria in the first place but it was the rest of the EU that have to handle all those people. If it wasn't for that civil war, the only problems the EU would have to worry about are financial (like how Greece basically went bankrupt).

The United Kingdom had enough of the German supremacy within the EU, and that is the reason why they are exiting. The Germans need to realize that they need to give in to certain compromises, if they want the European Union to survive in the long term.
