I wonder how many would be interested in a coin that focuses on CPU-mining? I think that it is possible to clone an existing coin and change it so the GPU and Pool-mining is not profitable. It obviously requires some tests and experiments. But it must be possible.

and verium is bad. it takes a long time to mine and the amount you get per block is tiny. Not really worth it from my 1 day experience

Verium is not a currency. It's a mineable reserve for vericoin. As you said "1 day experience": go back and study the protocol ;)

Time to mine is not the issue. The huge problem is needing 128MB just to verify a proof-of-work.
Proof verification is supposed to be very cheap, so this makes for a horrible PoW...

I think it is possible to mine a PoW coin with 200-300 old LapTops if GPU-miners and Pools are excluded.

ZCoin will fork a new algo in soon that is a modified version of Argon2 with MTP. It will not be CPU exclusive but CPU's will run it quite well

Those two threads not used by the cpu miner are used by the gpu miner for two RX 480's'

The gpu's from the same pc, the one that is my daily use pc that I am using to type this, here is the comparison.

So the dual xeons have a tiny bit better performance than the two RX480's and using less wattage.

I did try to mine it in our dc this weekend. Come on - it needs to go up, othervise it's like 42 hours of work for $0.4 in a datacentre that costs us about $478 a month.

Anyone tried renting cpus from amazon and mining?

An amazon VP went to our company to speak about the cloud and the future of online education. During the talk he talked about their servers being used for bitcoin mining. He didn't specifically say that they banned the people they found doing it, but they were aware of the situation. Probably best to try and do it now while its early. They will probably find a way to block it soon.

Why would they ban it, as long as company pays for used resources? It's even in their best interest, especially when mining using AWS is not profitable at all.

I never believe in such offers. No one will offer you the best deals. It seems to me that pools are most profitable. Yes the profitability is now very low but it is as it is. You can subscribe to it if you allow the price of electricity or not to participate in mining. It seems to me that there will be no better.

I really wanted to try mining and I didn’t care if it would cost me more than I would make in Bitcoin, so I looked around and stumbled across a bunch of different programs for mining. The one I found for using your CPU was funnily enough one named cpuminer.

I picked bitminter.com as a mining pool. It’s pretty small, but allows some OpenID logins, takes 1% off my mining efforts as a fee and seems like a legit place from what I could read on forums. It shows you statistics for how much your individual workers make and how much of a bitcoin block you have contributed to mining.

When people start abusing this system and using that hashing power for mining, it adds up to their costs and operating expenses.
We can only begin to imagine how much electricity they spend giving out 1 year free trials.

Magi coin XMG is still a CPU-only coin, already 3 years old. It may worth to add it to the list.

I also do now and then CPU mining, since I used to have a computer which sometimes I need to leave it running for days. But (strangely?) the coins I prefer to mine are not CPU-only coins, because the CPU-only coins are too cheap on exchanges. And lately the alts have fallen even more...

Anyhow, cloning a coin only for experiments may not worth it.

Thanks for the info. I did VERICOIN for fun with my 11 servers it mined like 5 in 5 days.  Looking at Magi coin XMG - it looks twice as cheap :-)

Ok so Magi coin is a viable CPU mining coin? By viable, I mean the income exceeds to cost of electricity in most spaces.

I've been thinking about this for a while too - I have a GPU mining rig and since that is running all day I may as well have the CPU mining something on the side (even if it is a little ole Pentium).

Open to further suggestions/hearing other peoples experiences.

How ever the price for the dual Xeon E5 2667 V3 more is more that 4x that price of the rx 480 even though you will get a much lower wattage out put from the CPU and not all can buy two Xeons.

Also you can get a i9-7900x for the price of one Xeon so on my opinion it is not worht is for some people.

What coin you can mine with CPU?

I did mine Vericoin (VRC) and they say you can mine Magi coin (XMG)
They're damn cheap.

On condition you have loads of CPUs and your other expenses close to zero. It may be OK.
But with the current rate they trade on - it looks like rubbish, unless the CPU mined coins would someday launch to the Moon?...

Who believes  that they can?

Not many coins support CPU mining

For me personally than to use the CPU as the site of mining, better use of GPU or special tools such as Bitmain. Because now this is not the place for the CPU that is profitable, because much of the technology that has changed and no doubt they will use technology more efficiently. Because everyone wants to use the latest technology, now it ITS CPU is a technology that is not efficient and take up a lot of places as well as electricity. Use the CPU for a much more profitable activities and use the GPU or special tools to mine.
