Title: I have $2300 in gift cards and want to build a mining rig
Post by: HouseMoney on April 04, 2017, 08:49:48 PM
What is the best bang for my buck rig I can make?

Which alt coins are most profitable/easy to mine?

Thank you!

well where do the cards let you spend money?

I would be able to advise you to go in two directions.

Maybe a 2 card rig  with two new geforce 1080 ti gpus

and a 3 card rig with 3 new rx 480 gpus.

there are two schools of thought..

the nvidia geforce 1080 ti are a really good card for mining ZEC coin

the amd are better at the other coins.

two rigs allows for being diverse.

If your mining ZEC:

$1675 ZOTAC mini 1070 x5 ($335 each from amazon)
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01LLAJ8PU/
$8   USB key
https://www.amazon.com/Lexar-JumpDrive-128GB-Flash-Drive/dp/B00S5V5PMY
$57   Corsair Vengeance 8GB ram
https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Vengeance-1x8GB-Desktop-Memory/dp/B005T63BJM
$80   BIOSTAR TB85 mobo or similar
https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813138436
$50   Intel Celeron G1840
https://www.amazon.com/Intel-Celeron-G1840-Processor-BX80646G1840/dp/B00J2LIE9C
$2     ATX power switch
https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Button-Switch-Switches-Computer/dp/B00B2ZBYGG
$140  EVGA GQ-1000 psu
https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-1000GQ-Modular-Warranty-210-GQ-1000-V1/dp/B017ICWP82
$54    pcie powered risers 6x pack

$150   spotswood frame via pp
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1487782.0

total $2216

expected hashrate: ~2250 sol/s  for ~700 watts

this is at 125 watt powerlimit per card; you can lower powerlimit to be more efficient if you have expensive power

0.9848888888888889 $/hash (hash in sol/s)

If you want to mine ETH you should make an AMD rig; if you go this route: I would wait for the new AMD cards or buy a used rig from another member.

What are the new AMD cards? When do they come out?

I was planning on starting off with mining ETH.

You can put together a 6x RX 470 rig for mining Eth + DCR for ~$1300, less if you build the case yourself. If you want to spend all of the bonus money then a more powerful rig might be a good move for you. Bang for buck and return on investment will obviously be longer if you got that route.  Either Eth or ZEC seems to be viable to mine right now.

you should have purchased the 1080 ti i linked and built a 1 card rig to start that can expand to more cards.

but it is your money.  there are quite a few ways to go.

but that 1080 ti  will be worth close to its for sale price for quite a while.

I just bought the 1080 ti you recommended  ;D

Now I'm thinking what I want to do essentially is start off with that card and build a pc that can be used for programming work (data mining and machine learning) as well as light gaming. AS WELL AS be able to be an entry point into mining.

Basically, I'm thinking I'll want to get a few of those new AMDs as well to allow me to do ETH mining.

I'd also want 64GB of RAM and an SSD in the 500 GB range.

Would it be ok to cram all of that in one giant case? Or would it be better to have a separate setups for the personal pc vs the mining rig.

Right now I am just on a laptop.

What would you guys recommend for these uses?

Thank you for all the help so far everyone

In theory that card should earn 7 dollars a day with not counting power costs.
Say 1 for power

6 a day profit.  117 days it paid off.

You have a lot to do with the pc
I have used a few z270 boards
And a decent i5 7500 CPU

Works well. Closed cases get hot you need good fans.

It is late I am going to crash. I will post info tomorrow
