Title: Earthquake hits Manila
Post by: Kemarit on April 08, 2017, 07:35:26 AM
An earthquake shook parts of Luzon around 3:09 p.m. Saturday.

The tremors were felt in Metro Manila, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Cavite, and Zambales, based on first-hand reports of netizens online.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has yet to issue a report on the quake.
The quake followed Tuesday night's 5.5 temblor that hit Batangas City and other parts of Luzon, which generated more than 40 aftershocks.

There are chain messages that are spreading like wild fire on sms as well as chat on messenger. The rumors is saying that a big one will hit Manila and other parts of the country. After reading your post all I can say is that the Filipinos must stay alert always and keep updated with the events. They must coordinate with the Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office in their locality for an earthquake warning and announcement.

Why this is even in the news? The earthquake had a magnitude of just 5.9, and it had a depth of 43 km. This means that the number of casualties are likely to be very low. Also, the epicenter was some 70 km away from Manila in the South China Sea.

If I haven't seen this on FB, I wouldn't have noticed. Then when I read more I found out why, coz it's still some distance away from Manila. Some people say they felt it though. I dunno, maybe I'm not just sensitive.

We've been experiencing a series of earthquakes in various regions here in the Philippines, that's why people are nervous even about the smallest tremors.

Thank you for your concern but as far as I know there are no casualties here in southern luzon. We have been affected by the earthquake and aftershocks that followed but it didn't destroy infrastractures. It did only minimal damage but I don't know in other parts of Luzon if there are any casualties. I have only felt it was only like riding on a bumpy car because I am in front of a computer when that happened.

Where were you when it happened? I'm seeing FB updates saying they felt it here in QC. I was quite oblivious of it though. I saw the damage done in some places in Batangas, sad to see some century old churches there damaged.

I'm actually hoping we get some weak earthquakes here in Manila. The West Valley fault hasn't been moving for a long time. If it were to just move suddenly, it could be a really strong earthquake and I doubt building here would be a match, considering how lax they are at implementing the building code.

The series of earthquakes in Mindanao seem to suggest that when one part moves, the others start moving as well.

What we can do right now is always be prepared in earthquakes because there is no known scientific equipment that can predict earthquakes. Animals are showing some signs before an earthquake happens because they sense something that humans cant sense.

There are some casualties happened, like broken houses and some people in the skycrapers panic. Experts said that Philippines must be prepaid on " the big one ", because the faults underneath may shake anytime.

Something very often begins to scuttle the earth in all parts of the world. Of course, very bad from the fact that many people suffer, by nature, they will not joke with us when we harm it. But Manila is the region where there has always been a risk of natural disasters?

Right. The earth is tired of enduring human bullying in nature and constant wars. So she sometimes devours people in this way. This can happen in any country, if not stop spoiling the land and harming living beings.

I also felt that shaking here in Southern Tagalog, it is a bit strong movement.

Those rumors are not really helping, but it is a scary thing if it happens. People must be aware and be prepared when the Big One occurs. Trainings and Earthquake drills should be taken seriously especially by students.

The chain messages really spread as fast as it could. I don't know if it helps, but for me this chain messages only adds to the discomfort we are already feeling. I am scared and worried for all Filipinos especially to those in Batangas who greatly experienced the quake. I agree with you that we should always stay alert and be updated with the events. I just hope that are government is prepared if the Big One happens.  :(

Philippines sits close to the Pacific ring of fire, so there is always the probability of a major earthquake striking the country. Perhaps the government should put more emphasis on making sure that the building codes are followed.

Yeah, you are the right that the Philippines is located near the Pacific ring of fire. It is also the reason why storms occur frequently in a year.

Well a series of earthquakes actually rocked the Philippines these past few days and that doesn't really happen normally. I think this is actually a sign that something is coming and people from there should be vigilant and ready. I heard there were oar fishes washing up on some of the islands and a lot of people are taking this as a sign that a disaster may very well be forthcoming. Again it's better to be ready in these circumstances.

Yes. There was a series on small quakes last couple of days now. Is this is a sign for the big one? Government has been preparing since last year because they are expecting a big quake. I remember my kids telling me that they have been practicing earthquake drill since last year.

No one can predict when the big one is coming but its better to be prepared and ready. I hope it will not happened because lots of innocent lives will be lost. For those Filipinos who has not been born in 1990, a earthquake of magnitude 7.8 hit Luzon in July that year. I still vividly remember it, more than 1000 lost their lives in that unfaithful day.

Nope.... Hurricanes and tornadoes have nothing to do with the ring of fire. Only the probability of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions increase as a result of the proximity. That said, Philippines is at a high risk from major tornadoes originating in the South China sea. But I am not sure about the reason.

If I understand correctly, then the hurricane tsunami succumbs in different ways. Tsunamis from titanic plates that move and create an earthquake. And a strong wind appears due to a collision of different temperatures.

Well does it means that manila is being abusive with regards to taking care of our nature? Or maybe the were only taking the consequences of the other regions abusive on our nature? More than that nature is very unpredictable because even if you do take good care of it there would always be a disaster

The important thing is to notify the people who are surrounded or near the area and let them prepare because the earthquake has been on going through the weeks that passed. It's somewhat continuous and the people should be notified. Not because it's a small earthquake, it still should be broadcasted, it's likely some structures were damaged also.

You are right about Tsunamis. They are caused by submarine earthquakes. But I don't think that the hurricanes are in any way linked to the seismic activity. But when was the last time the Philippines was hit by a Tsunami?

People needs to be informed of something like this for them to be aware and be prepared. That is really true, the fact that it has many volcanoes and plates that mobes makes the Philippines one of these country. I guess the Government needs to be more alert especially the residents of each country close to a plate. I am also feom the Philippines and I felt these earthquake, many people are getting scared of what may happen.

I think the Philippine government has already put enough effort to be prepared in such scenario. But knowing Filipino's for being stubborn and will not leave their place identified to be prone to be hit by earthquake after several warnings from the Government. It's up to the people to follow what the NDRCC has put so casualties can be minimized. Again, the probability of a big Earthquake is possible, that's why we should all be prepared anytime.

It's a little exaggerated, The last earthquake doesn't make too much damage. But it should be an indication that there is a movement in the plates near those places, specially the fault line which everyone knows where the "big one" might happen.

IMO, Philippines is preparing to this kinds of disaster, we all know that it will happen in time, so probably if it happens, we don't know what will happen and how many will die, government should be preparing for the impact and not just the preparation.
