Title: First ever graded Casascius coins?
Post by: SgtSpike on April 24, 2013, 05:13:04 AM
I sent 5 of the 2011 series 1 coins to ANACS in late February... they finally arrived!  As far as I know, these are the first Casascius coins to be graded by a professional grading service.

Nice. How much did it cost to grade one? I wonder if I can get PCGS or NGC to grade a casascius coin. :)

So...do not keep us in suspense.

What grade did they get?

Those are beautiful. Could you send me a picture of one for my class? I'd like my students to see something that's not on ebay.

I don't have the copyright to use in a commercial product. Unless you say so

Sure!

I sent 5 in, so got a slightly better rate, but $20/ea + $55 to ship them back to me.  So $155 in total for the 5 of them.

So...do not keep us in suspense.

What grade did they get?
63, 64, 63, 64, 66.  The 63 and 64 ones have some fairly obvious tarnish (though the picture I took REALLY brings out the difference between them).

Want to just use the image I put at the top of the page?  Or were you looking for a picture of just one coin?  Either way, I authorize you to use the 3 pictures I posted in a commercial setting.

At that price, if I were a scammer, I would invest in some of those blank/unfunded 1 BTC I once read about, later selling them encased with the rating at a premium when the price rises.

Better yet, if I were a scammer, I would amass these, or fake my own, encasing them with an attached fake rating and sell them at a flea market at some ridiculously cheap price, pretending I didn't know anything about them, but some Bitcoiner would come along and think he's getting a bargain.

Well, you'd have to also fake the hologram...!

What were the actual grades?  Most of the Casascius coins have some minor defects, i.e. lack of centering in the window, scratches on the hologram, small indents on hologram edges, scratches on the metal on reverse side.  I've been considering getting some graded, but if they are graded using regular coin standards, I can't imagine that very many would grade high.

63, 63, 64, 64, 66.  I don't know what is normally "high", as I've never really collected coins before.
