Title: Newb Here! Need info about mining! I'm very interested!
Post by: Divinityxd on April 24, 2013, 08:29:08 PM
I know this information is probably everyone in the forum, but I really can't track it all down. Any tips, advice, etc, would be GREATLY appreciated!

Here are a few questions I have:

--Before hand, in any examples, I'm going to say that I can produce approx  2000 mh/s--

1) If I am only able to produce a hash rate of 2000 mh/s, would mining BTC via Pool be more profitable? Or would mining alt coins be more profitable? If so, will it be profitable by much? Which alt coin would you recommend? Solo or Pool?

2) Is 2000 kh/s considered in terms of mining BTC 2 gh/s? Does 1000 mh/s = 1000 kh/s = 1 gh/s?

3) Which would be a good / decent hash rate to obtain to profit around $1000/month mining ANY coin (and please tell me which coin!)

4) How much $ would this set-up (on average) cost --referring to #3 above--

5) Should I just hold off and try my luck in attempting to purchase an ASIC from BFL? (I know it'd take months to get here, I was thinking on still making an order, and buying some GPUs in the mean time)

6) More hash rate = GPU correct?

7) What is the maximum amount of GPUs I could have set up to 1 PC?

Question 2)

1000kh/s = 1mh/s = 0.001 gh/s.

2MH/s? that is veeeeeery low even for scrypt.
u sure its not 2GH/s?

Also! I'm sorry for double posting!

Could someone link me to a thread showing how to set-up multiple GPUs in one computer?

I want to set up possibly 5-8 GPUs.

I have approx $2500 to invest, and I'm not sure what will get me the best hash rate possible right now.

Question 2)

1000kh/s = 1mh/s = 0.001 gh/s.

K.

Ah... Can you correct me on this?:

lets say I have a GPU that hashs at 300 mh/s (.3 gh/s) and I'm mining for Litecoins. While mining litecoins, is this considered 300 kh/s?

roughly (not sure if 1024 issue applies to hashrates like storage?):
1000kh/s =1mh/s
1000mh/s =1Gh/s

2000kh/s (or 2Mh/s) is near useless (if that is BTC speed) unless it draws no power (or your power is free).

Have a look at http://dustcoin.com/mining for the answers to 1 & 3. You won't get $1000 a month on anything except a large amount of fpga's (not being made) or ASIC's (not many available).

4) depends
5) you will be at the tail end of a long queue. Unless your power is free it is not worth buying GPU's due to difficulty increasing.
6) ?
7) 4 is good, depends on available slots and psu strength. think i have seen some with 6.

and remember google is your friend :)

I think I worded my sentence wrong. What I meant is..

If I had for example 5 GPUs giving me approx 2000 mh/s, and were talking in terms on mining BTC-ONLY, is this considered 2gh/s? Is the BFL Japleno considered 5000 mh/s (5 gh/s?).

However, the reason I asked if when mining Litecoin the mh/s is changed to kh/s is because I seen people selling Litecoin rigs that produced 2000 kh/s for a $1500-2000 price or more.

ALSO! Its really not worth it to go out and create a $2500~ BTC/Alt-coin miner right now because of the difficulty increase?

If there is such limited amount of asic/fpga's released - Why are there SO many people mining with gpu/cpu? It must be some-what profitable?

Realistically, how much of a hash rate would one need to produce in order to make an income of $1000/month?

if you have $2500 to invest on mining, get an asic rig. your best bet right now is to buy chips from zefir and then get the rig from burnin.

And then what ? For $2500 you have less power than the 1000 main miners on any pool which means it will take ages to get proper ROI. Spend $25000 (or more) or buy BTC rather than mine them ;-)

OP stated he wanted to mine not trade coins. i suggested asic since he's better off with it than mining with gpu's.

What would you spend 25k on? curious

Well why else mine if your not even gonna trade down the road?

  • invest $2,500 in off-the-shelf CPU/GPU hardware now
  • mine for as long as you want
  • cash out
  • sell CPU/GPU parts on eBay for 75% - 80% of what you paid for it
