Title: ASIC Board Questions
Post by: Mr.Pink on April 24, 2013, 08:38:19 PM
Hello This Is Mr.Pink

I have a few questions for the board.

1) How can I make my own?
2) If I can't make my own ASIC miner then what is the average price and who is a trusted seller?
3) Can I mine other coins with the ASIC miner or is it only for BTC?

1) You can buy ASIC chips, I have found a few links on the forums that Avalon is selling chips. If you have access to a chip foundry and the funds, you can have the chips themselves manufactured for you (read: Not Cheap, and only in bulk).

Additionally, you would have to etch and assemble the circuit boards yourself. There are also board users capable of doing this for a fee.

2) Google Avalon and Butterfly Labs, check out their webpages, though the wait is quite long. The best thing you could do is check the forum for the above arrangement I mentioned and get in line to buy one of those.

3) As far as I can tell, ASICs that can mine bitcoins can mine any SHA-256 based cryptocoin such as Terracoin, PPC, and Devcoin.

2. good luck as they are all sold out or pre-order and the line is effing long :)
3. no the name ASIC stands for application specific integrated circuit and as the name implies it is designed for bitcoin mining only.

I think they could also be used for the altcoins derived from bitcoin (PPCoin and Terracoin come to mind) since they use the same algorithm to do the hash...

Thank you, This has been quite informative.  Though I heard some rumors about butterfly labs, and buying the bulk amount of asic boards would be insanely expensive I am still yearning to invest in at least four machines.

Hopefully BFL will get their act together at some point and will actually fulfill all the orders.

I am waiting on confirmations on BFL before I buy anything.

Yeah, I've seen enough to make me think it's not *entirely* vaporware, but they're clearly a company that doesn't have their act together (either have never done hardware manufacturing before, and hence underestimated every step of their supply chain, or deceived customers to get early funding).

That said, I bought a single, mostly because I had some bitcoins in my wallet from a couple of years ago that were suddenly worth a lot more.

I'm hoping ASICMINER comes through at some point, they seem more on the ball.

Hey, what state does your order show? Mine's been in "processing" for a while, and I think that's different from the state where they're still waiting for payment, but I'm not sure.
