Title: How safe is blockchain online wallet?
Post by: loposki on April 15, 2017, 01:23:03 AM
Ever since I ventured into the bitcoin world, i've been using the blockchain.info online wallet and it hasn't really been a pleasant ride. I have had several cases of my bitcoin being transferred to the wrong address. My most recent issue is my bitcoin simply vanishing... Not a trace! Not even in my transaction history.

I try to keep all my passwords hidden, enabled 2-factor authentication, and this still happens.

Is there something i'm doing wrong or is blockchain.info not just a secure wallet.

Has anybody experienced anything similar?

Blockchain.info's wallet can be extremely buggy and is poorly written. If you truly want your Bitcoin to be safe and to use a legitimate properly written wallet software, you should use a desktop wallet like Electrum or Bitcoin Core.

Your Bitcoin cannot simply disappear without there being a transaction sending it away from your wallet. If it is "disappearing" then there is probably an issue with your wallet software.

As for Bitcoin being sent to the wrong address, there are malware that will replace any address you copy with the address of an attacker so you end up sending Bitcoin to the wrong place. You should make sure that your computer does not have a virus.

Thank you.

I'll really like to know if Electrum or Bitcoin Core is free.

What do you mean free? Do you mean transaction fee? If I were you dont be a fan to those wallet service that has no transaction fee all of them are suspicious.

If that's what you mean then all of them(all wallet service/software) is free to download just to make sure that you download it from the official website of the particular wallet you want to use and make sure that your computer is safe from malicious malwares.

I have been using their web-wallet for 3 years and have only had a single issue. I have done hundreds, maybe thousands of transactions. The only issue I ever ended up having is when they updated the system and one of my old wallet addresses ended up with an error I don't really know anything about. 9 dollars worth of Bitcoin can't be moved out because of "too many unspent outputs" or something like that.

If you're having this many issues with it then you should probably switch to the Bitcoin Core wallet. It might be a huge download, but it's completely under your control and you won't have these issues unless these issues are user error.

For Bitcoin to be transferred to the wrong address is pretty unusual. I possess hundreds of different cryptos and have only experienced this when my coin ended up on the wrong chain. Even still, it went to the correct address, but on the wrong chain. I've never had Bitcoin just vanish. With 2FA it's unlikely your account is being compromised, but still possible if they have access through recovery, or if you have a RAT, I suppose. If you can remember your password then it's not secure enough. Unless you're Aida.

It sounds like you're doing something wrong, but I don't know. You could have malware too, I suppose. I'm assuming you've ruled that out already, but if not, might be worth looking into.

Thanks a lot guys, your inputs are greatly appreciated. I think i'll look into the Electrum and Bitcoin Core wallet.

I've actually never had any problems with the Blockchain wallet, but I'm generally told that it's not a very good choice due to frequent bugs and issues.

If you're sending to the wrong address, that's extremely unlikely to be Blockchain's fault and you might have malware.  If you do have malware, I would suggest running several virus checks before you download a software wallet, because Bitcoin in software wallets can be stolen by malware pretty easily.

When you know that you're safe, you should note that Bitcoin Core is pretty hard to download - you'll require a lot of disk space.  It's the official wallet run by the current development team and you're essentially downloading the entire blockchain to run it, which is called a full node.  The Electrum wallet is better for convenience and probably will be best in your case.

Blockchain.info is generally as safe as other online wallets. Good for small amounts that can be accessed from anywhere.
You should use an offline wallet for larger amounts though.

This, there is some malware that modifies your clipboard to a different address when you paste.

Three words.

Open. Source. Software.

Isn't it great?

In this decentralided world, no program should be paid for, only hosted by the user. The more people that use it, the more stable we all are as a whole.

Imagine 500,000 people/ wallets and even if we assume there is 1BTC in each wallet it'd be a large amount of 500,000BTC *minimum $1000=$500M.
So if the above conditions are met you could see the temptation they might face.

Never deposit your coins in web wallets, store them in your own offline controlled addresses and only use online wallets to receive bitcoins and then move them after you received.

I'd like to take advantage of this topic and ask from someone who knows (expert) I want to run Core wallet in my home laptop like a lite wallet/ electrum without the need to download the whole block chain and becoming a full node, please guide me on this matter.

You can't. You can enable pruning which means that as the blockchain is being downloaded, once the blockchain reaches a certain size (which you set), Core will begin deleting old blocks in order to maintain that size. However you will still end up consuming the bandwidth and time required to download and verify the entire blockchain.

To enable pruning, just add
Code:
prune=550
to your bitcoin.conf file.

Sorry you have had a bad experience. Do not forget to consider using a hardware wallet. Your private keys are kept securely off line. I have never heard of anyone losing bitcoin who used a Trezor or Ledger Nano S wallet.

Sorry for your bad experience. I also an active user of their service, have strong passwords, enabled 2-factor authentication. Still have not experienced any little issue. Although so far web wallet never recommend, for great experienced paper wallet is probably the safest.

Blockchain.info is secure but just like other web wallets you may experience trouble whenever their server will have some issues. I think Light weight wallet like electrum can provide better and stable solution than any other web wallets. Using any of these wallet will not give you full security if you don't make proper backup of your wallets.

Not that safe, but that really isn't the biggest issue here. Blockchain.info has bugs that have not been addressed since its inception and has been observed to be quite unresponsive at times of high demand. If you want a feature rich web wallet you should try greenaddress or if you're after simplicity but wouldn't mind compromising some features and privacy Xapo is ok also ok.

One reason for people to constantly change their addresses because even if they wanted to run away with funds they'd need to load private keys with balances manually to transfer their funds to their own addresses but when you change your addresses it'd be much harder for them to steal your money.
There is no guarantee of safety when you are using any web wallet.

I've been using BlockChain online wallet for over 2 years.
Never experienced any problems with it. Pretty satisfied with it.
But I wouldn't 100% suggest it if you want to store any big amount of BTC.
In this case, your best bet will be using an offline wallet.

I think its a bug because same here never experience that thing..i hope that you contact the support first and maybe there are some bugs in your accounts so that they can take action to fix your account..
Or much better to try backup your private key and install it in electrum instead.
