Title: mining litecoin Post by: bitcoinbrett on April 25, 2013, 06:13:01 AM does anyone have any suggestions on it?
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: saffron on April 25, 2013, 06:18:01 AM I've only used the standard CPU miner, but you can get better performance with GPU mining: https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Mining-hardware-comparison
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: btcmcdizzle on April 25, 2013, 07:01:35 AM You'll need to use a different algorithm called Scrypt. Google is your friend ;)
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: scotjam on April 25, 2013, 07:13:11 AM Can avalon / butterfly etc be used for litecoin as well? Has anyone done a comparison on pricing to see which is more profitable (given that presumably litecoin is easier, but less valuable than bitcoin)?
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: pepHJ on April 25, 2013, 07:13:51 AM You can use cgminer. just add --scrypt to the command line
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: pepHJ on April 25, 2013, 07:15:53 AM No, ASIC(butterfly labs) cannot be used for mining litecoin.
For comparison you can look here: www.coinchoose.com Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: mr_john on April 25, 2013, 07:21:41 AM Can avalon / butterfly etc be used for litecoin as well? No I don't think so, as ASICs are specifically designed (in hardware) for one algorithm. It's like a software manifested directly into hardware. This makes it very efficient on the one side but completly unflexible on the other side (unlike a normal computer it can do only this kind of operations and nothing else). So in general you can only mine coins with them, which use the same hashing algorithm as bitcoin (SHA-256). For this reason you cannot mine Litecoins with ASICs (as they use Scrypt), but others which also use SHA-256 (AFAIK). john :) Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: phortran on April 25, 2013, 07:31:13 AM Can't use BFL/Avalon/etc. ASICs for LTC, although you should be able to use them with other sha256 based currencies like PPCoin.
At this point it seems GPU is the only way to go for LTC mining. Are there any other alternatives on the horizon, say FPGA? I'm guessing the RAM requirements for scrypt hashing make GPU the only reasonable mining solution for awhile, am I wrong? Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: Majormax on April 25, 2013, 08:58:26 AM LiteCoin pools
https://github.com/litecoin-project/litecoin/wiki/Comparison-of-mining-pools P2pool is useful system and should be easier to set up if you haven't done it before. ASICs don't work for script based hashes. It is a memory issue, but not only the RAM, it's the whole chip/cache which is more intensively used. Would need a redesign of the motherboard also. Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: bitcoinbrett on April 25, 2013, 07:12:34 PM when i tried to join a litecoin mine pool with minerd all i got was an error asking for a json config file. is there a directory i can find that or do i have to make one myself?
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: jk1985 on April 25, 2013, 07:31:59 PM Just use Guiminer; https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=150331.0
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: RandomNobody on April 25, 2013, 07:33:28 PM You can also mine decently with cudaMiner (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=167229.0)
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: rainesdeuce on April 25, 2013, 07:33:53 PM CGminer and Reaper are the ones that i use, CGminer is an easier setup
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: jk1985 on April 25, 2013, 07:35:04 PM Please post your setup?
Title: Re: mining litecoin Post by: HjerterEss on April 25, 2013, 08:23:59 PM As of today its actually more profitable to mine with GPUs on Litecoins. Difficulty will skyrocket once the FPGA/ASICs hit the bitcoin network. Luckily Litecoins are still ASIC proof :p
