Title: Reasons for Underclocking?
Post by: lemonys on April 25, 2013, 12:56:36 PM
I have read that some folks underclock their GPU memory speed and undvervolt the power of the GPU card.  Can someone explain what this does and how it helps?    Is it purely to cut down on power consumption?

Thanks in advance.

Less heat will allow for higher clock frequency  :) Memory clock is useless for bitcoin mining, so lowering it is a good idea, because it lets you raise the clock speed even more

better speeds and more money ?

Less heat, therefore less fan RPM and less noise when I'm sleeping.

underclock memory

So basically you should underclock memory and increase clock frequency to get a higher hash rate?

correct, lowering the memory clock will reduce temps and allow you to increase the core clock (which gets more mhash)

just don't try to watch videos while the gpu is underclock memory

Great tip - thanks~

I am now mostly mining scrypt based coins.  My limited understanding is that scrypt calculations are much more memory intensive, which is why they are ASIC resistant. Can anyone confirm this? And if so, then underclocking memory is not very beneficial for me, right?

In my experience, yeah.  I get the best mining with my 7870 using 1260/750 for bitcoin and 885/1250 for litecoin.  There's a lot of information out there, search around!

Thank you for the confirmation, time to go monkey with the cfgs.

Thx for this information... less heat, is better :P

Computer manufacturers add underclocking options as it helps to overcome excessive heat buildup, and  lower the amount of energy needed to run the device.

Underclocking the memory is ideal for SHA256 (anything but Novacoin, Litecoin, Feathercoin) hashing, whereas for sCrypt hashing it will harm your hashrate.

The ideal thing to do is under-volting. This is basically free reduction of power consumption and therefore heat production and with no loss of MHash. This can, however, only be taken down so far.
