Title: TorCoin: a new possibility for anonymity
Post by: mynhpark on April 19, 2017, 01:05:46 PM
TorCoin is an anonymous cryptocurrency launched 10 days ago. It utilizes the X11 Proof-Of-Work consensus to allow miners to power the network of TorCoin. TorCoin is fully integrated with the TOR network. TOR is a decentralized, open-source network that enables people throughout the world to use the Internet anonymously by routing IP address information through multiple nodes on the network. TOR helps users defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance which threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and even national security.

TorCoin offers several important features that Bitcoin does not. First, TorCoin rewards people for running a TOR node. Whereas Bitcoin transactions are completely traceable, TorCoin enables you to send coins anonymously. There is never any need to 'mix' or 'anonymize' your TorCoins - they are anonymous by default. TOR is fully integrated with TorCoin, which means that a snoop or attacker watching your internet connection will not know if you are using TorCoin - and other TorCoin users cannot determine the physical location of your Torcoin node. TorCoin also offers encrypted end-to-end messaging between TorCoin users.

It is currently listed on Coinmarketcap:

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/torcoin-tor/

What are your thoughts on TorCoin, would you use it in addition to Monero?

There are already a ton of altcoins and also bitcoin wallets integrated with TOR network so I don't think this TORCOIN add anything more to that. I wouldn't use it at all to be honest.

Yeah I don't see the appeal of this coin over a ton of coins who already do this. Seems to offer very few new features, but will definitely look deeper into thanks for alerting me to it.

Is the idea new?
This was in other coins.
The developers decided to make a profit on someone else's name.

This isn't anything new and has been a selling point for many coins but I suppose for a coin named tor it makes sense for them to add it.

There is nothing special with Torcoin as there are already many coins with tor that were launched years ago.

With TorCoin you are running a full Tor Node. This helps the Tor Network. The more nodes connected the better for the Tor Network. No other coin does this.

logically right most of the time are created to be anonymous as bitcoin as well so there's no special regarding to this coin
they are just using the TOR name to attract members of this forum to buy and support their new project.

This is what I'm reading:  "Blah blah blah blah blah, another fucking shitcoin comes to market."

Does that about sum it up?  Can't you use any one of the thousands of coins no one is ever going to trace?  Come on, you can call it whatever you want with whatever gimmick is trendy, but it's another unnecessary shitcoin.  Period.  It's designed to make its developers money, and designed to suck money out of the pockets of ignorant fools.  Have at it.  You deserve it.

I don't know why people are saying that there are many coins offering what TorCoin is offering. I haven't seen any coin offering this:

I am not promoting this coin or anything, and I am not even sure about if it's real or a money-grabbing scam, but I can stand repetitive mistakes. Coins like Zcash, MaidSafe, Monero, etc. offer anonymity, but not like this one.

just some little change to the feature doesn't make the coins new based on its function, it's basically the same, why switching off to the uncertain coin if there's  already exist certain ones

You switch because this coin is only $3 right now and it's going to be $20 this summer.

It's an interesting project however we already had a similar coin, but if you know how to manage and attract more user then this coin can be famous, zcash is also offered the same feature, it just a shame that it didn't succeed at the market, hopefully this coin can do better than zcash

SCAM people.

AVOID, AVOID, AVOID.

Do not buy TORCOIN unless you want to lose money.

1. 'Dev' premined 10% of total supply. The rest is POW. If the 'dev' was serious, they would do full POW, and buy mining power towards it with fair announcement.
2. 'Dev' has not revealed anything about their identity/credentials.

3. This is the crazy part. The 'dev' has actually posted on the TorCoin forums that he will pay a real 'dev' a small percentage of the premine to do actual dev on the coin.

4. Coin does not offer anything new. No new features. No community. No innovation.
5. No roadmap.

Don't buy this crypto. Buy Monero, PIVX, even Dash (I hate Dash) etc. PIVX even has TOR nodes. if you are interested in investing in privacy/anonymous focused crypto.

Oh, and they advertise on CoinMarketCap with banners. The only cryptos that do that without self-funding marketing mechanisms are SCAMS.

Everything you said is nonsense but this has been pointed out as demonstrably false a bunch of times in this thread. Let me ask you, which other coin actually helps the Tor Network by having the wallet run a Tor node?

It looks like this coin is already dead before even starting. All the information are really helpful. This will be my guideline if there's a new coin appearing on the market.

TorCoin is not anonymous like you think it is.

I ran some packet captures against the Windows TorCoin client using Wireshark and found the following:

* Clear public NON-Tor DNS traffic asking for http://seed.torcoincoin.com
* Clear public IRC traffic to irc.lfnet.org and irc.smutfairy.com
* Does NOT connect to The Tor Network by default.

Here is a screenshot of the IRC traffic:

You can download the Wireshark packet captures here so that you can see for yourself:

running a tor full node?

that means the police could get here because someone used the Tor network to spread Child Porn and they will blame me?
