Title: Is BitGo as safe as they claim?
Post by: squatz1 on April 20, 2017, 01:19:21 AM
Have been using BitGo for awhile based on the security that they say they offer and I had moved over from Blockchain on the reason that I feel I'd be in full control of the keys with my wallet. Now I know some people will say that I only have half but that means I have more control than most web wallets I'd say.

Would someone say BitGo is as safe as they claim and worth it or are there better alternatives?

Thanks for the help.

All I can say is it's much better to use than coinbase and it was also listed in https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet but I'm not preferring to use any web wallets nowadays though. But as the site mentioned (bitcoin.org (https://bitcoin.org/en/choose-your-wallet)) that's true that you have to trust the developers of this app not to steal or lose your coins on this site.

I can't say much as I haven't used bitgo's service yet. Sorry but it is impossible to be in full control of your wallet if you will be using a web wallet . Why? because they don't give your private keys and private keys are the proof you're the owner of the said wallet. If you to be in full control use a desktop wallet like armory and electrum, for android you can use mycelium .

If you insist on using web wallet, the best one I've used so far is blockchain .

Why don't you just use light weight wallets like electrum where you will have full control over your bitcoin as well as your wallet details will never leave your computer/mobile. Just memorize your 12 word recovery phrase so that you can easily restore your wallet if you ever lost your computer/mobile.

You're kind of right, Blockchain is still a web wallet and they still basically hold your coins for you but they give as much control as they could really manage while still being a web wallet.  For security features, they're the best.  However that doesn't mean that the security on their side is all that good, like with the Cloudbleed problem and several other major bugs and flaws with their wallet.  You'll never be completely safe on an online wallet, so you have to accept that Blockchain is basically just as close as you can get, without being good.

Beware of their fee estimation though.  It's terrible.

I've been using Bitgo now for quite some time and all I can say is that it is safe especially from my experiences in using it. I haven't had any problem with them and the security that they provide is nothing to sneeze at. They also have 2FA so that you have another layer of security before logging into your account. They email you when there is an incoming or outcoming payment in your BTC address. If I'm not mistaken, they also provide you your private key for your wallet address with them.

Such a good info i think they are just the same as blockchain wallet but i am still not satisfied of using online wallets instead much better to use electrum instead  or any trusted desktop wallet.. online can be possible getting some issue like in coinbase that i experience of delay receiving and delay in support. they should be also active in support.. unlike electrum that you can fix it with your own using some commands or already experience of errors before.
