I have heard theories that he is not a single person but a group of entities. I would think that if it was a group someone would talk at some point though. Human nature has a really hard time keeping things like that quiet. One person tells his friend, and then they tell their friends and so on. I have my thoughts. If bitcoin becomes so mainstream and ends up becoming the currency everyone in the world uses, there may come a day that he will need to come out of hiding to "help" the world. He would be the most powerful person in the world at that point! Would he use his power for good or not? That is the question? Or he may always stay anonymous and I might just be imagining too much. But seriously: Whoever he/she/they are, the most likely scenario is that they had the idea (the crypto-idea itself wasn't new, but the implementation was innovative), realized "wow, this shit is gonna be huge!", then made it happen, keeping a lot of coins themselves as a retirement fund.
