Title: What tempature do you run your GPU's
Post by: vonross2012 on April 26, 2013, 02:29:59 PM
I was wondering at what tepature and for how long have you been running your cards?

I think a lot of people shoot for temps ~70C.

Pfff, I only mine LTC and Im happy if my cards are under 100c. But they are kind of cramped up and OC'd to bejeezus.

My understanding of GPU tech is that the chips can run MUCH hotter than a CPU for long periods.

For a CPU, 90c would be too hot but for a GPU 90c is totally fine, but I have to set fans to 85%+ to get this, so fan life is reduced.

Good to know.  I have just started and my temp runs about 91c.  I saw in another thread that it's still ok even to run at 110c.
I don't see how someone can run at 70c and get any kind of hashrate.

I'm running 2 7970 at 1200kh for scriptmining.  I haven't tweeked any settings yet.
Just set it at max 20 in Guiminer-script.

LTC mining at now.
3x7970 ref. 915/1600 49C, 53C, 52C. Hard watercooled  :)

I wonder if I can do something like this:

...with a lot of cooking oil and my bathtub...   ;D

I'm aiming < 85C.

How much time and money is spent doing that?
Isn't it hard to justify the exra cost when the margins are so low?

BTC mining with (5) 7970's and they range from 65C - 70C all day/night.

No special cooling equip.. Just the stock fans on the cards?

In one location I run them at ~82C because I don't like all the fan noise. In the basement, they run at 75C or less.

7 5830's in my basement all run between 55c-65c, 1 5830 and 1 5750 upstairs run 62c-70c respectively. Auto fan for the 5830's and the 5750 is set to 85%.

Running gpus at and over 90C will kill them quickly, at least in my experience.  I was running them at ~85C and they were ok until I pushed them over 90C.

Now, I'd recommend staying under the low 80s.

 I have 56C , I have a laptop with a huge fan underneath.

I try to hold my setup under 80 and VRMs under 90. When I start two years ago, I hold under 90 and in few cases and reached 93-94 during few hours and nothing bad was happen.

I recommended for GPU under 75-80 and lowest rpm fan.

My stuff usually runs between 60-70'C. I don't like it getting hotter than 75'C

In some places 60-70c is not doable.  In Southern CA it gets pretty hot and my cards get to 60C in just 5 seconds of mining.  Ambient 75F.

If VRMs stay under 90C and card is under 85C it should last 2 years plus.

My 7970s are at 80 to 89C with two big fan blowing at them ... I guess that's the best I can do considering I am in a all year summer (> 30C) tropical country

The setups that I have are both open air with one Lasko fan that I bought at Lowe's blowing across them.

Mine run at 100-101C. Been stable for 3 weeks.
It was a crappy designed 7950, where the fan spin at 100%, and still temp at 100C. Open air, no case. Used riser cable, space between cards.

Interesting. Don't the cards have a speed trigger/shutdown at 100C?

Take the heatsink off, and repaste the GPU. It should not be running that hot.

Sheesh you guys, let those GPUs breathe!

Might be a good idea to reseat the heatsinks with good thermal compound like Noctua or Arctic Silver. I've seen 4-5 degree differences in reviews which actually could make a difference when we're pushing them to the edge like this.

Clean the surfaces well with iso alcohol and use a 5mm dab on the center of the GPU.

80C but prefer the fans to be less than 65%

BTW I just tried 2x7950 in a system and the top card hit 98C and dropped MH by half!  Cards seem to work fine in separate machines.

Max I run my cards is around 80-82, hopefully to get at least 12 months use out of them before the fan dies at 4000rpm++

2x7950 running at 925 core, 1250 memory, and undervolted to 1000, 555kH+ each
Bottom card running at 69c, top at 75c, both on autofans, ambient around 30c.

Open case. At stock voltage with a closed case the top card was running 100c+ and running into thermal shutdowns.

haha, because it was throttling itself

until the last month or two, i rarely had cards go over 80oC.  now one or two do on hot days (maybe when it's 29oC or above outside)

and I always have fans at 100%

though at this moment out of my 18 cards, 6 of them have 120mm fans ziptied on.   im not sure if i should fix that before ebaying or not.  the reference fans used to cost like $10, now they seem to be around $15

as for those 5870 gigabyte dual fans and what not, forget it

May or may not build a 3x7950 system but I'm going to do a custom case with risers.

Back when I was in my own flat (before having to move back) I aimed to run my GPU at around 80C as the fans were just ineffective at their job (the whole flat was boiling from all that heat so there was no fresh air coming in to cool that PC).This ran 24/7 for several months like this as well.

HD6950 would crash at 85C due to unlocked shaders being unstable whereas running with stock shaders with same overclock settings at same temperature, kept running.
