Title: How are you storing your ethereum?
Post by: Truthchanter on April 24, 2017, 05:37:56 PM
The regular wallet (mist/geth) took up 20gb the last time i tried it and either has to be running all the time or takes hours to update to use (from what i remember)

Any alternatives, especially liteweight, out there besides just storing them on exchanges?

You can use Parity, and prune the chain. you will have access to a fully functional node with less blockchain size, with some limitations.

Or fetch for some ethereum lightwallets, but you won't have any RPC or console possibilities as it is the point of lightwallets.

If you just need to store ethers, you can use Exodus or Jaxx.

I store them using MyEtherWallet which is a great mix of security and ease of use. It is an open-source lightweight client requiring no synchronisation. Simply the best Ethereum storing method out there, hands down !

But MyEtherWallet is only online, right? And if happens something to the website? Will it be possible to get back the money?

myetherwallet.com is so great that you can store different kind of tokens which is why this is also what I'm using. I'm storing my GUP, ICN, EDGELESS and Xaurum in myetherwallet. I will also add some Taas TOken later once its available in the exchanges. What I like so much of it is that you can use it offline by downloading the zip file of it.

Why using that hassle wallet while theirs myetherwallet existing? Just listen to the other suggestion since this wallet can assure that you wouldn't get pain in the ass if you want to transact you eth as soon you would need it but you need  some extra balance for gas up.

But if you want to store in exchanger well much better if you separate your eth and don't put all you have on one basket.

Rule of thumb: forget about 'web wallets'.

I'll say it again: do not store your coins on third parties' servers. This practice goes against the core idea of a decentralized currency and puts your assets at risk.

Always store your coins on a device that you personally own and control. Your least secure option is to use a mobile wallet. There are many mobile wallet apps on the market, but I won't recommend any of them because they inherit all the security flaws of the underlying platform - be it iOS or Android.

A better option is to use a desktop wallet (assuming you're using a Unix-based operating system, i.e. Linux or macOS). Check out Exodus (http://"https://www.exodus.io") - it's a clean, lightweight, cross-platform wallet app that handles ETH, BTC and a bunch of other assets.

The most secure way is to use a hardware wallet such as Trezor or KeepKey.

You can use Jaxx or Myetherwallet if you're worried about space and like the features that they offer (several coins, several gadgets (chrome extension, mobile apps, etc.). It is relatively safe (I believe that you're only 100% free of external interference using hardware or paper wallets). Do some research and give a try on what suits you best.

Come on guys, do you even know how www.myetherwallet.com even works? Do you know what a client-side wallet even is?

https://www.myetherwallet.com is a nice CLIENT-SIDE (javascript) wallet.

You have to have the wallet.dat on your PC for it to work.
If anything happened to the website, nothing would happen to your wallet.

It's very good if you do not want to download the whole blockchain on your PC and be able to access your wallet from everywhere.

https://www.myetherwallet.com doesn't actually have any of your wallet's information, because it's client-side.

They do however hold a copy of the blockchain so that you don't need to download it.

im using an online wallet for my eth, its safe i thinkg because of the site securities and I believe its safe because my friends are using the same wallet like mine, they are completely trust this wallet like the way i did.

I only ever kept mine on an exchange as I wasn't ever really pleased with the ETH wallets. Trezor does support storing ETH if you have one and would probably be one of the better methods of storing it.

Coinbase has been working out fine for me and I trust them to a degree.  I do not trust them on some things that are important, however. I am speaking of privacy. I am also speaking of the length of time that purchases done through Coinbase always take 10 days or more to appear in my wallet  I have much to learn about how to best take advantage of anonymity.  I believe anonymity is important to the future of cryptocurrency.

Use web wallet https://www.myetherwallet.com not in need of time to synchronization instead of client wallet. Its better choice if it is ERC20 of ethereum.

I've tried to download ethereum wallet but it's so huge and takes a lot of time,so I have no choice but to settle with Jaxx and myetherwallet, anyway both are safe and secure and lightweight compare to the desktop wallet.

I am using exchanges at the moment because I trade a bit but I don't own much ETH. I do have some ETH based tokens though so am using MYETHERWALLET to house those, along with the exchanges. I hope to look into other wallets in the future, when I get more heavily into ETH BASED projects, which is inevitable as many new tokens are being born on the EHTEREUM platform.

Use cold storage. Not safe to leave funds for a long time in exchanges.

This is also i wanted to say i do also use myetherwallet but i do only put small amounts of ETH and most of it are stored on cold storage because no matter how trustable and reputable the risk of losing all coins is still there and we wont know on when it would happen.Downloading whole blockchain or syncing is really pain in the ass but you must sacrificed if you do really like to store your ETH.

Well, people mostly don't trust exchangers and themselves, so they don't keep money there. Poloniex was down some time ago, by the way, wasn't it?
Anyway, I store my eth in an online wallet (ethereum-wallet.net) and am happy for it. Password, login and e-mail -nothing else is needed. I don't use eth much, though, so I am not sure how fast this wallet operates.

I always worry a little about threads like this--like someone (not the OP, but potentially anyone) can use this information as a stepping stone towards figuring out where you store your coin. If they can start linking that to a real world identity, then can begin the work of trying to socially engineer their way into your wallet.

Although cold storage is more safe but as I am a small investor and cannot  afford to trade a good amount of Etherium or any other altrcon there I mostly put my Etherium in online wallet. As I always found it trusted and never found any problem related to my etherum wallet.

you are correct but there is also one thing to remember, people usually don't hold these altcoins for long, good traders that is.
so they want to have them hot and accessible at a moments notice and as a professional trader you don't want to even miss a second. so you keep it on exchange and dump it as fast as possible to make the most profit possible.

besides running a wallet for most of these altcoins, specially ethereum with its terrible wallet is a pain in the ass and it will eat up your network and HDD so fast.

Yes, this coin got a good potential to become the best altcoin in future. Now is the right time to start accumulating in small quantities and store for another one-two years. Surely we will see a huge jump in price and we can make some good profit from this investment. As of now, I'm still storing in the online wallet but thinking to switch to off-line wallet soon.

Myether wallet is good but it doesn't have a good security. If someone be able to access your private key and you will be over. I think mist or hardware wallet is best place to store our ethereum, ERC 20 token and ERC 23 token.

Any alternatives, especially liteweight, out there besides just storing them on exchanges?
I now store my ethereum online on a  PARITY (https://parity.io/parity.html) and MY ETH WALLET  (https://www.myetherwallet.com/)moved away from the desktop wallets.. they just take too long  to sync and all that
plus ransome malwares like the WannaCry emerging which i believe could easily damage wallet backups i think i made a good decision.

I am using myether and I find that it is very easy to use. They give us the data file and also give us the privatekey. Keep them safe and backup it because one day you might lose them.

The regular wallet (mist/geth) took up 20gb the last time i tried it and either has to be running all the time or takes hours to update to use (from what i remember)

myetherwallet is the eaiest wallet I have used. The panel is simple, to send and recieve is easy to use. I am not storing eth before , put it in exchanger but after try my etherwallet I think I love it.

I stored my ethereum in 2 wallets first is coinbase I use it few months ago when the coinbase listed ether in their wallet before I use exchanges site wallet and if the price sell direct selling. But storing altcoin in exchanges site is very risky because they have many senerio the trader hold their altcoin ti the site after few days the altcoin gone. I also use myetherwallet I transfered the 50% of my total ethereum in that wallet because I think that is more safe because you have only private key and you can open your account the hacker cannot open that because you can know only your private key because no one can know . Except to you.

Myetherwallet is the place i store most of my coins as it is really easy to use and since coinbase started accepting ether and litecoin i will be planning to store some to their wallet and majority of the coins which i am saving for the long term will be saved in paper wallet as i am not planning to move the coins for now.

Into my etherium wallet so I can use for trade fast. But if I feel something wrong I choose to exchange my eth become currency ( $ ) and saved in the bank. Everyone have different opinion about where they save their eth, but it's normally. Keep your wallet pas and ID far away from everyone and always change the password every 1 - 3 month for safety. Have a nice day.

Doing paper wallet very similar to bitcoin. Then keep it in a secure place. Never share private key to others.

Paper wallets + Ledger Nano S + Parity/Mist.
Paper wallets? I didn't think that you could make Ethereum paper wallets. Mind sharing the site/software?
Also, does anybody know of a creditable "light" wallet for Ethereum?

i prefer storing ethereum on a online wallet like myethereum i dont use wallet that needs to be sync because i am lazy to wait for the blocks and hackers cant get into my wallet unlike desktop wallet
Yes that is the right decision, as I personally do not like to pass through different process for depositing and widthrawal of my Etherium. therefore  personally I also prefer to store my Eherium in online wallet that is really very convenient for me to use it.

yes that is a good decision you just need to hold these altcoin and then you can really get a good profit. most of the people who earn ethereum or any other altcoin they just sell it do not wait or study the market either the price of these coins are increasing or not.

If you don't want to download ethereum blockchain and it times consuming, myetherwallet is really a good idea and simplest way to store your ethereum and you can backup your private key also export it to your wallet so it safe.

Does myether have a copy of the private key to? If not then they would probably be a really good alternative to a regular node.

I use myether wallet as it is secure and they provide us with the walker file and we don't have to download the whole blockchain to start using the wallet.
