Title: Which wallet are you using?
Post by: GuiltySpark343 on April 27, 2013, 02:51:20 AM
So which wallet are people using?

I know there's the "official" Bitcoin-Qt, but also Electrum, Armory, MultiBit, etc. So far, I've been using Qt but am getting annoyed at the transaction fees I have been paying to send BTC.

Any suggestions, and please give a reason. Thanks!

I was using the Armory but it and the standard bitcoin-qt one were eating up too much of my hard drive space so I had to uninstall.  Right now I just have all my funds in mtgox and bitstamp...not sure how smart that is but at least I can sell my BTC quickly if price starts to plummet.

I use multibit. It allows multiple wallets, syncs with the blockchain really fast, and allows private key exports and password-protected wallets. I have used it for about a month and have no complaints.

QT was using up all my disk space and bandwidth. So switched to Electrum. Keeping a small amount in Blockchain.info for its advanced features.

After a friend of mine had his blockchain.info wallet broken into (we suspect via a javascript exploit or perhaps an android app on his phone - he was not using 2 factor authentication, although that wouldn't matter if they had stolen his private key before he enabled it anyway) as a part of the greater blockchain.info heist that happened on the 25th (which was discussed here (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=187822.0)), I elected to move all my BTC out of their web wallet service and set up Armory cold storage on a flash drive. Or as one Reddit user put it, "9 easy steps for people with computer knowledge. 9 giant leaps against mass adoption." I already had the Ubuntu .iso and a flash drive. It took about an hour and I feel a lot safer although this method of signing transactions is perhaps slightly tedious. I'm basically using Armory with an offline version of Brainwallet.org instead of having to install bitcoin-qt and download the blockchain. And as for transaction fees, I usually pay .001 because I don't like waiting around for my transactions to verify. I decided to keep the blockchain.info android app, but I only handle small amounts of BTC with it now.

The cold storage method I used (I didn't write this btw, I just followed the instructions): http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1d26gw/

I like Electrum and Multibit.

Electrum = can show the ammount (btcs) per address (I like that).
Multibit = fast sync and reset option.

And both lack the ability to create a wallet from imported key only (you get an extra address/key pair that you may not be willing to use). In Electrum it can be done from the command line with gap limit = 0, but you still have the 3 change addresses (that you can choose to not use).

I will like to see that feature on both. (create empty/no-addresses wallet, to then import the desired ones).

- snip -

That depends on how secure your password is.

If your password is "abc123", you will almost certainly lose your bitcoins to theft eventually.

If your password is "b678VvQ&*o78bvn2cv67^%@Ip59X#4x35Z", then it is probably secure enough.

Bitcoin-Qt and namecoind here.

I don't have a problem with the transaction fees on Bitcoin-Qt.  They're very very low, and as a miner I realise that the future viability of the network may in part depend on transaction fees.  Consider it a very small tip ;)

Since nobody replied to my post about cold storage, and I've noticed there are several more people recommending blockchain.info despite the recent attacks, I'd just like to add that if you do use blockchain.info, it would behoove you to enable 2-factor authentication (SMS confirmation texts) and consider using the "disable TOR access" and "restrict IP address" options. It might also be wise to create a new wallet every so often, or to keep small amounts in separate wallets. And of course, if you are going to be using bitcoin, it is absolutely imperative that you use reputable antivirus and antimalware solutions. Your whole life you've been hearing about protecting yourself from hackers and viruses, well now it REALLY matters (not to imply that it didn't before, but you know what I mean). Take the necessary steps, protect yourself. You'll be glad you did later.

Also, I am curious if the online wallet breakins we keep hearing are due to the site's own security, or a lapse on the user's part (weak passwords, keyloggers, etc).

I don't think there is a clear answer on this yet.

There has been some discussion about several of the "break-ins" involving accounts with poor password security (same password used on multiple sites, and/or weak passwords).

There has also been some discussion about the possibility of weakness in the smartphone app where the password was stored in cleartext.

I think I remember there being some discussion about the potential for users to have encountered malware that may have captured passwords as well.

If your password is "b678VvQ&*o78bvn2cv67^%@Ip59X#4x35Z", then it is probably secure enough.

By the way, late reply I know, but XKCD has a great comic about password entropy which you can find here (http://xkcd.com/936/). "Through 20 years of effort, we’ve successfully trained everyone to use passwords that are hard for humans to remember but easy for computers to guess."

I don't think there is a clear answer on this yet.

I agree about there being no clear answer - each case of theft is different and I've heard many stories of people having their coins stolen, not just from blockchain.info. There are numerous means that attackers can use to access your wallet, and protecting yourself from each threat should be of the utmost concern to every bitcoin user. I detailed in a previous post the steps that blockchain.info users can take to protect themselves, but honestly, I have to wonder why you would use a currency that was basically designed to circumvent banks and then entrust your money to an entity which is basically just a different form of bank.

I get that it's convenient. I just mean that if something does go wrong, you were pretty much asking for it.

Title: Re: Which wallet are you using?

Would running Norton anti-v catch most keystroke loggers?

I wouldn't want to depend on it for any amount of money that would be devastating to lose.

What is two factor auth.

Generally it is authorization that is based on both "something you know" (first factor), such as a password and "something you have" (second factor) such as a Yubikey or Google Authenticator running on a smartphone.

If someone guesses or discovers your password, they can't use it to authenticate since they don't also have your YubiKey or smartphone.

If someone steals your Yubikey or smartphone, they can't use it to authenticate since they don't also know your password.

Note, it is important not to write your password on your Yubikey, or store it on your smartphone, since then anyone who steals it will have both factors.

I use Electrum.

Electrum is a very good, newbie friendly client.  It doesn't require to download the whole blockchain to your computer, because it talks to dedicated Electrum servers, not to the P2P network.  On the other hand, the private keys that are needed to handle your transactions never leave your computer, so the servers can't steal your money.  It also has some useful command line functionality for quick queries or for writing scripts.

Aside from Multibit, I actually use LocalBitcoins with Google Authenticator for my online wallet. LocalBitcoins is a great way to get coins by the way.

Has anyone else tried Coinbase? After waiting 5 days to get my order processed, I got an email saying that it had been canceled because I'm a "high risk," which is comical. The site seems to have potential, but it's currently not well organized or run.

I personally use blockchain.info because the API works well with my faucet. I also tried the bitcoin-qt but it needs ages to sync so I extracted the private key and moved funds to my other wallet. inputs.io takes fees and therefor I wouldnt use it. I'm not sure if they are mixing the coins while they are stored in your wallet but someone told me so I rather don't use them because there's free to use wallets like the opensource one from coinpunk in which i will have a look as soon as i got my own server running for my faucet and other stuff i planned.

Depends on what service you use but for every coin on your wallets there should be a private key that you can extract and then import to another wallet. What service are you using exactly? There should be something like "generate private key" or "export" in the menu. you copy the output of that function to clipboard, go to the wallet where you want all your bitcoins in and then you have to look for something like "import private key" and paste it into it and then it should work. If you can specify on the service you use i might be able to give further help but I'll be off to bed now and will get some rest first.
Hope you can figure it out with the given information.
