Title: Coinbase scammed me!
Post by: Varun Gupta on April 28, 2017, 11:11:36 AM
Hey guys,

I am new here, so I don't know much about the post format and such, and I ask for forgiveness if I have committed a mistake.
But this is what happened -

I sent a payment to DailyIndieGame.com to buy a few points. Bitpay was the Payment gateway and I had to send $1 (0.001004 BTC) to the specified address [I know it isn't a lot]. Bitpay auto-copied the amount and address for me and I proceeded to my Coinbase wallet to pay. I entered the exact amount and checked it twice. When I clicked "Send", CB showed me the value in my Local currency [INR] which was correct, but when I clicked confirm, CB deducted a payment of 0.0014108 BTC (around $1.5) which was absolutely wrong. When I checked the transaction on btc.blockr.io,  [https://btc.blockr.io/tx/info/a53e1ec024eb37e1df56675f96721b719b8b77f3a34e3a95515059ebcb27362e (https://btc.blockr.io/tx/info/a53e1ec024eb37e1df56675f96721b719b8b77f3a34e3a95515059ebcb27362e)] CB had deducted a transaction fee of 0.0004 BTC (40%) which was a lot. When I contacted CB about this 4 days ago, they sent this today -

Also, my wallet had a balance of 0.03 BTC initially, but after the payment it got reduced to 0.00 BTC.
As you can clearly see from the transaction, they deducted 0.0004 BTC [40%] as fee, but only paid the block 0.00004 BTC [4%].

I hope this is enough proof. Please comment your thoughts.

Cheers,
VRG

I recently paid a tx fee of 5,40 USD. Bitcoin is not suitable for such small transactions, anymore.

So yeah, you just paid the tx fee; you didn't get scammed at all.

But payments that were done through my other wallets [For nearly same amounts] took only 4-5% fees. Also, my dashboard is completely corrupted, it does not show proper values, and it is really messed up. It also does not show the correct balance. I had 0.03 BTC, but after that TX, it shows 0.00 BTC
Coinbase doesn't respond.

Yes it is, depending on what you consider a small transaction. Fees are dependent on the TX size, not the amount. They always were. The demand for the block space, which is scarce, was just never high as it is nowadays so people didn't notice this.

Irrelevant. See my statement above.

Coinbase doesn't respond.
How long have they not responded to you?

as I see in  transaction detail, you pay 0.0004068BTC fees or 180.8 sat/B , so everything is correct.
if you willing pay less, you should use others wallet where you can set fee manual.(BTC core client, electrum)

There's really no point trying to pay less, it just means that the transaction will stay in the mempool for way too long.

It's pretty stupid to create a scam accusation because Coinbase decided to set fees.  They're only a scam if they take the funds in your wallet (which they have before to some people, but only if you're doing something illegal or against their ToS).

The network requires fees.  I usually pay much higher fees than that so consider yourself lucky.

I agree I never send a small amount I prefer to use other altcoins if it's only a small amount and coinbase will never scam for just a small amount, gone are the days when you can send bitcoin gifts as low as $1..

still possible, assuming that gift not need hurry, you can set ~21sat/bytes and if transaction size minimal , total fee will only around 6-7cents. and will be confirmed within 2-10hour
