Title: Ready to buy an ASIC miner... do they really EXIST?
Post by: Blackout on April 28, 2013, 01:09:39 PM
Ok so I have the funds to purchase a new dedicated rig and stop toying with with 10 hd 5830s, 5850s, and 7850s...

I am READY to buy one of these ASIC rigs from butterfly or Avalon but do they even really exist?

Help?

That's true. And it ships and reaches you in a week after the auction.

Yes I've bought one on the first auction and it was delivered me in less than a week. Thanks to John and friedcat

If I try to sum up the ASIC situation... from what i could read here on this forum.
you are gladly invited to correct me if i'm wrong ...

AVALON : 3 batches. Batch one has been processed (not entirely). Batch 3 not begun yet. possible 900 (batch 1 and 2) devices but some customer did not received yet.
horribly expensive except for batch 1 ... no news for batch 4 you can still see some prices but it is out of stock right now
trouble with delivery also .. (custom and batch processing)

BFL : at least one dev and one user received the jalapenos. ~5 GH/s 30 watts. 9 months of pre order before you can get one... now 274$.
probably in the 44k number of orders ... some were not validated, not paid, other canceled. I have read about a 400 shipping /day ...
Many haters here for BFL, I don't know if they truly believe what they say : I respect that, as long as they remain factual. Or they only try to discourage people in buying to get faster delivery (if they have a preorder), or trying to minimise asic chips mining ...(and difficulty going higher)
My point of view on BFL : they do and will produce their products. But they FAILED hard in doing it IN TIME and "giving Estimates"/communicating. We can understand the difficulty but i do believe they lie all the time : "it's gonna be there soon ..."
I did order a 5 GH/s Bitcoin Miner a week ago after i was a working device. I think i'm gonna be surprised when i reveive it for christmas ... (if i do ...)
They need to prove they are processing the order and sending devices in an INDUSTRIAL WAY !

Block Erupter Blade : afaik : 10 were sold in auction that were sold for more than 75 BTC ...
a new Auction is in progress ... see post from pixel75

Didn't look much into ASICMINER shares thingy ... I like to have my device at home :>

Avalon does propose the buy the ASIC chip "alone" (10k minimum order). Some people here believe they can design, produce and sell the board to provide power and data to the chip. GL HF to them.
Probably the best bet right now, but nothing available yet. Hard to tell who is going to be able to design the board and be able to sell in quantity... (maybe you'd have to preorder from all of them to have a chance ...)

The demand is HIGH ... the difficulty is going to EXPLODE (even if you consider GPU players leaving the game, and they didn't yet because the BTC is quite high)

Concerning FPGA, I've seen the Lancelot. I like it. But 350$ for 380 MH/s is still can only be interesting if the ASIC players fail to deliver. (probability remains high ...)
PM me if you considered it but want to group buy ... I'm in France. (10+ devices to have them at 300$ seems to be a minimum)

Comments are welcomed.

Pretty much summed the situation here.  ;D

The current auction is going at around 30BTC per 10GH/s! Come grab your ASICS !

I really don't want to do an auction. So none of these companies are actually shipping with an absolute real world price and delivery date?  Should I keep my 5830s and 5850s?

Thanks for the long detailed post.

Avalon has a BTC price, BFL has a USD price - but neither have a known delivery date.

Investing in ASICs is speculation. Difficulty, BTC/USD, and delivery dates are all unknown and you'll have to do your own calculation as to what's possible. Why not keep your 58xxs running while ordering asics?

They just aren't pulling in much at the current difficult compared to electricity costs.

You answered your own question then - if your cards are losing money you either have to speculate on ASICs or pack it in. If you want definite delivery, see:

That's all there is is people selling them on e-bay? And only the 5gh? I was looking at the 25 or 50gh model.

This all seems like a big scam to me I guess I'll stay away.

AMD would make a ton of money if they added some code to the 8xxx series ;)  They have to know we account for a large portion of their purchases.  For gaming I'd much rather run an Nvidia card.  Even 5GH/s per card and scrypt capable would nice!

EDIT: I had the 25-30GH/s model on pre-order them not delivering and my car dying I had to cancel.  Hopefully I can jump back in using BTC as a payment when they are actually shipping.  I'm much more willing to take a chance on products that are actually shipping.

Lol yeah for that money your approaching the cost of a GPU system that would have at least some resale value.  If they get to the point of shipping 30,50,100+GH/s systems regularly the jalapeno is going to be worthless.

I have often thought of seeing what I could get for my September pre-order if I posted a screen with my order number.

Simply stated, if you are just getting interested in ASICs now and you aren't willing to spend a heap of money ($15k or more), you are out of luck.

If you order now from Butterfly Labs, you'll be lucky to get something by the end of the year. There are 60k or so orders ahead of you!

Avalon is about to ship batch 2. Batch 3 is sold out and batch 4 hasn't even been announced yet.

Basically, if you order now, by the time you get your miner difficulty will be so high that it will never pay for itself.

Your only option is to go to ebay and bid on one of the avalon batch 1 miners ($30k+), one of the soon to be shipped batch 2 miners ($15k+), or take a big risk on the butterfly labs miners (shipping anywhere from 1-3 months away at least). There are a couple of butterfly labs jalapenos that have been shipped but they are only 5 GH/s and way overpriced on ebay. I'd wait for a 30 or 60 machine.

Hi, you can also head over to https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=189582.0 (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=189582.0) and order a little piece of the Avalon. With 20 chips you will have about 5GHash/s at 1.66 BTC for the chips and probably 1 more BTC for the device. The shipping date for the complete device is around August. I'm saying this as Avalon, not as BFL. It will probably ship sooner, but expect the worse.

Regards,
Steve

either you or i dont get it, if difficulty rises the asic is the only chip one can use to mine, so it will pay for itself, just a matter of time o.O

ASICMiner is auctioning off more blades at their latest auction at a fixed price (49.99 BTC) for their 10 GH/s boards

Benefits:

You'll get these within a week of auction's end
Beat everyone else who bought Avalon Batch 2/3
Great customer service (online guide up)

Comments are welcomed.

since you asked for input, I disagree with the underlined part above. batch 2 (when it was re-opened, after the original launch failed horribly) was around 56 BTC (worth exactly $1500 at the time) --- if that batch is received before june (even july) it will should achieve 100% ROI within around 2 months. batch 3 was a bit pricey, but should ship closely after batch 2...

when considered against 75btc for a 10GH/s machine (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=178275.0), 56 BTC for 66 GH/s seems reasonable, as long as it arrives before... say.... 30 million difficulty? (*note* the owners of those first batch erupters should be earning .5 BTC per day per card today, while the avalon batch 2 orders are currently earning nothing)

Also...
I just recently made this ASIC info page: http://minr.info/

Thank you. This is an awesome resource.

The simple answer to your question is yes, they exist. However by the time you get it shipped to you, the profitability will have significantly decreased.
