That was maybe a month ago, and now I'm building my first mining rig with a 6950 with unlocked shaders, a 5850, and a 5830 (in the mail). Up and running and I expect to get over 1GH/s on BTC Guild.
Don't discount the process over one person's failures and naysaying. Yeah, I have just over two BTC right now but I'm not in it for the money just yet. Yes the 4870 X2 is terribly inefficient, I know this, but it's still fun being able to PARTICIPATE in the bitcoin phenomenon. I just bought a 5770 and it's on the way and will replace my 4870 X2, which I will sell on ebay. Then when that sells I will buy another 5770, and build from there. I don't see the point of a dedicated mining rig just yet. Being a non-gamer yourself (obvious non-gamer is obvious) you have no idea what drives us. We are as excited about tech as you are, probably even more so, except we care about FPS not mHash. Many gamers like myself have spent thousands over our gaming lifetimes on hardware merely to enjoy games. That money is spent and gone with no thought as to getting any of it back. Now Bitcoin arrives on the scene and there is a lot of overlap. Now I can start to generate an income and make some money back. If it is profitable I can drag the half dozen spare comps out of the basement and put cards in them to start generating. If Bitcoin catches on in the gaming community there will be no stopping it. I have enough cases/parts/power supplies for six computers. All I need to do is buy graphics cards. I am seriously considering doing so and installing a mining client on them and then giving them away to some close friends and family. They mainly use for email and such, and wouldn't know a graphics card from a power cord. Free electricity indeed.
