The underlying principle is that everyone bets into the common pool and then the money is divied up among the winners. Because each contestant carries a different investment - the dividends are also different. Contestants that are heavily backed are considered "favourites" - have a higher chance of winning and, consequently, pay a lower price. I.e. reward is directly proportional to risk.
