Title: Any MMO with Bitcoin as Currency? Post by: Prefinem on April 30, 2013, 07:47:47 PM Is there an MMO out there that uses Bitcoin as its actual currency?
It would seem that if you built a virtual world where Bitcoin could be earned through work/selling goods and spent on in game goods, it would help economic flow of bitcoin and if the game was good, would help introduce new gamers to Bitcoin. Post by: cerebellum on May 01, 2013, 12:22:17 AM One of the most important aspects of your typical in-game currency is, that it stays in the game, even if you can buy it with real money. That way there is no money flow out of the game. The publisher of an MMO (let's take free2play) always needs the player to give one of two things, time or money. Or both. Often you can lessen the time neccessary to succeed in the game by paying money for boosters etc. Either way, you are supporting the game by keeping it active (important for MMOs) or directly paying for the infrastructure.
but it would sure help bitcoin :P Title: Re: Any MMO with Bitcoin as Currency? Post by: sniffinpoprocks on May 01, 2013, 12:29:21 AM bitcoins for WOW gold would be nice.

But like with all currencies, you need flow to make it work. A game, or something you can do (other than mining) to make/buy/sell bitcoins will only help the market. Post by: omegamormegil on May 18, 2013, 12:48:23 PM Oceania Online isn't quite beta yet (ETA is June), but the forum admin stated that it is going to work with bitcoin in game. According to the demo videos, you can set up vendor stalls to sell items for real money which you can withdraw from the game. There is also in game content you can get with real money, like personal islands.
You can pre-order the beta now. While bitcoin wasn't listed as an option to pay for the pre-order, I emailed the guy and he let me pay with bitcoin. Also, the game will run on Linux, as well as other operating systems. http://oceania-online.com/ I put a screenshot of the post on their forum here. https://mega.co.nz/#!gt5ESA4I!EIN5DXAPfL4du7QHmqCdIzQWTpwfr66abDaX4uLis7M Title: Re: Any MMO with Bitcoin as Currency? It would seem that if you built a virtual world where Bitcoin could be earned through work/selling goods and spent on in game goods, it would help economic flow of bitcoin and if the game was good, would help introduce new gamers to Bitcoin. ive been wondering for a while why no companies are willing to do this. There would be huge advantages to that company. They could create very subtle ways of allowing people to pay for their game. think flight path fees and armor repair costs could all be used to actually pay for the game. People would be much more willing to go into a dungeon if they knew that a good item drop could make them a quick $20 worth of spendable money. every single time a new mmo comes out and doesnt do this it is surprising. The fact that not a single one does is beyond surprising. Ive never been so sure in my life that something was a good idea and yet no one does it... its like these game companies are ignoring a giant pile of money with their name on it because they dont like giant piles of money or something Title: Re: Any MMO with Bitcoin as Currency? Post by: mepsipax on May 18, 2013, 06:46:40 PM I guess Wow had one of the first alternative currency, with their Wow gold. People still pay real cash for it via gold farmers.
