Post by: Piper67 on April 30, 2013, 11:41:37 PM
Just came across this: thebitcoinnews.co.uk/2013/04/30/today-is-the-day-we-are-very-proud-to-announce-the-worlds-first-prepaid-mastercard-to-exchange-your-bitcoins/

Not sure how legit it is.

hmm what do i have to say about http://thebitcoincard.co.uk/

the graphics on the actual website seem like teenagers attempt at photoshop. and not a template that a card issuer would accept.

their website itself seems amatuerish. not really feeling a vibe that the people behind it have thousands of pounds to credit the funds after acceptng your coin.

their webpage is not even secure . (no https)

no terms and conditions (which is a requirement card issuers have)

their whois details are of a french guy, french address but having a .co.uk website

ill now look into what trademarks they own and other such things..

i smell fish, and it aint the breath of a frenchmen.. well maybe it is

on their contacts page:
TheBitcoinCompany Ltd.

Contact

124 BAKER STREET, WESTMINSTER
LONDON
W1U 6TY
UNITED KINGDOM

thebitcoincompany ltd is not listed on companies house.

the business is not listed in that address.

the website was created only 3 weeks ago..

this fish is starting to smell rotten

Adding more fees and debt to bitcoin is something we do not want.

I think we're actually dealing with a retard, not just a scammer. (Of course he is likely both.)

Take a look at this nimrod's other sites:

  • The Bitcoin Card (http://thebitcoincard.co.uk) (Incredible! The first website ever to take money without a sales pitch, and not even use any https!)
  • The Bitcoin Company (http://thebitcoincompany.co.uk) (What an original name! lulz...)
  • The Bitcoin Pages (http://thebitcoinpages.com) (For a biz directory, there sure aren't a lot of bizzes in there...)
  • The Bitcoin News (http://thebitcoinnews.co.uk) (Just an aggregation of news from other sites, but by far his best offering to us.)

This dolt even has a job offering in London... So I think there is a small chance he's legit...

Just very, very incompetent.

Having access to the FAQ, or just to more info without having to register would be nice...

Definitely amateurish, if not downright fishy...

These guys, on the other hand, seem legit.

eCardOne.com From a licensed bank in Prague. Near as I can tell, a good six-year record doing exchanges between fiat and Liberty Reserve.

I was going to post the FAQ for you, but why bother.  It's harvested from other prepaid card sites anyway.

there are many companies that offer this, all of which seem more reputable than this offering.

the "holy grail" offering would be a bitcoin-backed debit card, where you held bitcoins in a wallet which "backed" the fiat and/or bitcoin spending power of a mastercard / visa debit card.  My company is working on this offering, as was BitInstant as of a while back.  There are MANY hurdles with this offering - not only is there finCEN, but it may not even be possible if visa or mastercard end up not wanting to play ball.  Even if they did, we're talking an investment to the tune of hundreds of thousands of dollars to develop the solution and maintain compliance with state and federal regulations.  Moving business outside the US does not remove this burden, as MtGox recently found out.

I could have seen this coming.

It doesn't matter if your corporation is registered on Mars.  If you want to take American customers, you have to comply with the banking laws of EACH state, in addition to federal law.

Which doesn't mean the USA has any moral authority to seize a foreign company's internet domain. Control of generic top level domain (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generic_top-level_domain) (.com, .net, .org, etc.) registrations needs to be taken off the hands of the American neo nazi government ASAP.

I'll one-up you:  Never mind having the right to seize a foreign company's domain, I'd argue (along with my fellow anarcho-capitalists) that the US 'government' doesn't have the moral authority to exist, period.  Governments by their very nature assume that you do not own your own body or the property you use your body to acquire, and your very person is subject to the will of the 'collective' (fictional entity).  So if you believe in self-ownership as a moral right, you must reject the idea of an involuntary 'state' / "social contract" theory.
