Title: Some beginner questions - Mining with servers
Post by: elc4pitan on May 18, 2017, 05:41:52 PM
Hi all,

i have a couple questions.. i just received 2 opteron servers

specs,

CPU:   2x AMD Opteron 6174 12-Core 2.2 GHz (2x 6 MB Cache, 6.4 GT/s, AMD-V)
RAM:   16 GB RAM
HDD:   2x 146 GB SAS Hot Swap 2.5"  10.000 rpm

and i will have them running in a server room until October, power and internet will be free until the end of october, after that i need to find a room where i can keep them running cool and well.. at low cost ( but that is an issue for me to solve later )

I've been experimenting with several alt coins.. eth, xmr and the bytecoin ( altough after what i read about bytecoin im a bit wondering if i should invest time in it at all ) and as test i went into miner gate ( yes yes i've read the megathread today )

So far i've only tested with miner gate and a couple i7 machines ( dell precisions to be more accurate ) and i had 200mhs?? ( cant remember the correct naming ) on each while mining eth.. so considering the opterons have way more cores and ill dedicate them just for mining....

So my question is... i'll have these servers up and running on monday and i'm wondering what can i mine with them until i get money to build a proper mining rig?

Thanks in advance.

What about ETH? Not worth?  I made this 0.000857796856866320 worth of ETH with just 5 laptops in 3 days while i was setting up the servers so im kinda wondering.

Whats the logic behind XMR ?

That's about $0.10 USD.  That likely would not even cover the electricity cost of charging those laptops for 3 days.

XMR can still be profitably mined with some CPUs, but just about everything else needs a GPU or dedicated hardware.

Ah thanks for the info and the link.

The laptops where just a gig i had running to experiment with mining and test some stuff, i was just curious because i probably did aprox 21h  mining with those machines which i understand are far from perfect but still i was pleased with the results.

Ok ill rig the servers to mine XMR, since i dont pay for electricity in the next 5 months i might aswell put them to good use while i wait for my first real mining rig... did some more research and i'll give ethos a try with a 6 gpu machine.
