Means Hold On for Dear Life, or if you want to see it this way a distorted way of saying HOLD. I'm sure you would have guessed by the way people use it, but it refers to a person holding onto his coins no matter what, believing they'll bring him profit eventually.

HODL is used for "hold" - it's a term that was invented by a psycho who did a typo and it became famous.
Whenever people talk here about holding their coins, they would rather say "hodl your bitcoins".

It's a reference to this thread (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=375643.0).

The point is that if you're not really good at trading, you shouldn't try to be because you'll end up making loads of big mistakes.

HODL is a typo that happened mistyping hold. In the future days this will serve as a bitcoin word when a separate dictionary for cryptocurrency is generated. Few others were FUD, FOMO, etc

HODL is just hold, just another terminology in crypto and just a typo of hold. There are many more used in speculation like FOMO, FUD, etc. You often hear them when someone is speculating but I dont use hodl because I know it is a typo that became famous but even if that is the case I dont want to intentionally type hold as hodl. Its up to you if you will use it too or not but in my case I will not use it if possible.

It's a Spoonerism (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spoonerism) for "hold", originally used in this drunken rant's title: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=375643.0

Or more recently, a backronym (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Backronym) for "Hold On for Dear Life".

It means "Hold on for Dear Life", in short it is a terminology used in the cryptoworld and means hold on to your coins instead of selling them.
