I couldn't help but notice the thread at the very top: 'Bitcoin Core ...... Released'. I was just wondering as to what this 'Bitcoin Core' is and what it is used for?

Its the "official wallet" that was first created by Satoshi Nakamoto (the creator of bitcoin) and the thread you see on the TOP is simply a thread that you will continue to see over the years (as long as bitcoin core is being updated, basically the changelogs).

This process can take hours to days and takes +100 Gb of diskspace. If you don't want this, you should look at an SPV wallet like electrum. Yes, it downloads the full blockchain and verifies everything... |
