Title: Bitcoin Core?
Post by: Enabled on May 22, 2017, 06:58:34 AM
Hello all, I am still learning about this new technology of Bitcoin. I couldn't help but notice the thread at the very top: 'Bitcoin Core ...... Released'. I was just wondering as to what this 'Bitcoin Core' is and what it is used for?

This is a bitcoin wallet used to receive/store/send bitcoins. Its the "official wallet" that was first created by Satoshi Nakamoto (the creator of bitcoin) and the thread you see on the TOP is simply a thread that you will continue to see over the years (as long as bitcoin core is being updated, basically the changelogs).

Is this wallet online or downloadable onto your computer?

It's a desktop wallet, so you download it, and sync it... This process can take hours to days and takes +100 Gb of diskspace. If you don't want this, you should look at an SPV wallet like electrum.

BTW: i would strongly advice to stay away from online wallets for multiple reasons.

Why does it take so much space? Does it have to download a copy of the blockchain on your HDD? Is the HDD speed of importance later on? I have an old 120GB SATA from many years ago, you think it's suitable?

Yes, it downloads the full blockchain and verifies everything...
