Title: Butterfly delivers | Shipping of our BitForce SC ASIC as begun!
Post by: elg on May 01, 2013, 09:48:30 PM

Dear xxxxx,

Shipping of our BitForce SC ASIC miners has begun!

You may have seen news reports of our ASIC miners in the wild and some of you may have already taken delivery.  It's all true.  We're finally shipping.  You will receive your order as we work through the shipping queue .

If you didn't know, you can check your order status on our website. Log in by clicking here. Use the same email and password you set up your account with.

If you don't have your password, use the Lost Password function to create a new one.

So what took so long?

This third generation of our SHA256 engine was a complex multi-year investment in bringing the latest semiconductor technology to bitcoin mining.

Developing a fully custom 65nm ASIC processor is not a casual undertaking. In fact, the new products have improved mining speed by a factor of 72. This much advancement doesn't come easy and it's fair to say that getting here has been eventful.

The key issue has been the engineering related to accommodating larger power draws than expected. A good example is the Jalapeno product. It was originally designed to be powered by USB but now consumes the power of a small light bulb (30w).

Consequently the power regulator, enclosure, airflow and PCB needed upgrading to suit. Although we are *very* aware of the undesirable dynamics of any delay, we were nonetheless obligated to make these updates in order to deliver a reliable product at the expected performance.  The same adjustments have been made with all products in the lineup.  You can see the adjusted product cases in our currently posted product lineup.  (The Mini Rig case will be double shipped to satisfy their orders which is why we've run out Mini Rig enclosure stock).

Final confirmation is required

Please be advised that due to the adjustments described above, we need your confirmation prior to release of your order into the final build queue and on to final delivery.  It may also be a good time to review your purchase altogether relative to the bitcoin market as this is the last opportunity to do so.  If your order is not confirmed, it will be canceled and your money will be refunded.

Thank you for your support and we wish you great satisfaction with your product!

I got the same notice, and the non-response from the server: "This page (https://products.butterflylabs.com/customer/account/login/) is currently offline. However, because the site uses CloudFlare's Always Online™ technology you can continue to surf a snapshot of the site. We will keep checking in the background and, as soon as the site comes back, you will automatically be served the live version."

Hardball by somebody.

Well, looks like we have to wait also for the delivery of the order confirmation page.

Meanwhile Josh give us some days to confirm:

While at it, let them know call stacks on production sites are a security risk.

I have this same email.  It looks suspicious to me.  Embedded links do not point directly to BFL site.

I assume that good order, paid for months ago, will be delivered.  Perhaps they should have stated that their product would deliver the stated performance, +/- 10% or so.  Just like EPA mileage "your mileage may vary"

Just sayin'

They did this because of legal reasons - to be on the save side:
[1] They screwed up power and performance, so they want to get your OK.
[2] They screwed up shipment dates - and know that it will take a long, long time before your units will be shipped - and difficulty will have sky rocketed and you only make a fraction of the Bitcoins that you would have made had BFL shipped on time. They want to get your OK for that too.

Basically it's like a blank check for BFL: "OK we screwed up big time but you have to sign here XXX and confirm that this is still OK with you".

Not that some of you guys come up with the idea of suing them ...  ;)

Wake up, people!
They're doing this not because they are such a customer-friendly company - they are doing this for a reason.

Yikes! Hopefully they don't have the SQL server on a public facing IP, someone could snatch the entire DB right now.

The links in the email look like a standard external mail marketing provider.

It's much easier to believe that BFL sent out this email and inadvertantly DDOS'd themselves than to believe someone wrote a fake BFL press release with photos.

Hoisted by their own petard, as they say.

They need to be quick now, change the credentials and turn off the callstacks before that DoS (wherever it came from) is over.

If anyone has gotten through to the server, and confirmed their order, do you know if they have an expected ship date?
ie: did they tell you when you expect to get your shipment?

I would guess that their email triggered a DoS attack (ie: possibly 40K+ customers all trying to confirm)

Yes. It looks like good news but it isn't saying anything new. We know they've shipped a small number of Jalas. They don't claim to have shipped any Singles, or even say when they expect to.

If you read it carefully you'll see it is actually asking you to amend the contract of sale. If you do, you are not only agreeing to the changed specs, but you are effectively waiving your right to cancel as the time of shipping is not a term of the contract. So if it takes BFL twice as long to ship as you think it will you are stuck.

No, shipping has not begun.

BFL just sent you a nice letter with lots of yadda yadda. The interesting part is this here:

"Please be advised that [1]due to the adjustments described above, we need your confirmation prior to release of your order into the final build queue and on to final delivery.  It may also be a good time to [2]review your purchase altogether relative to the bitcoin market as this is the last opportunity to do so.  If your order is not confirmed, it will be canceled and your money will be refunded. "

+2 Be careful guys.  I assume most of you who waited this long WANT your miner.  What I would do is email or send them certified mail saying you accept but only as long as you get it by XX date otherwise you want a refund.  That way you protect yourself a little, legally, from waiving everything and then they can make you wait another 6 months or whatever.
