If it is asking for a password, it sounds like you already have a wallet previously set up with a password on that machine.

If you don't have a password setup, you should be able to backup and remove the C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Electrum\wallets\ folder which should allow you to create a new wallet.

He says on my Mac and electrum is at a different folder in the Mac OS. It is located through the finder  (shift+cmd+G) and type ~/.electrum . There is where electrum is located. Check if there is a wallet file there, if it is, it means you already had it installed before. However if you want to start a new, delete that folder and reinstall Electrum again from the beginning. It should not ask you for a password anymore.

Backing up the old wallet could be useful, even if the password is not known now.
...Better safe than sorry.
