Title: Hardware Wallet
Post by: Hulton on May 24, 2017, 12:53:21 AM
Hey, So basically I would like to get a hardware BTC wallet. I've been searching for hours now and all wallets have the same problem - they cannot be used with Phone. All of them require to be plugged into PC with dev's App. The alternative I've found was OpenDime. It looked perfect, since the wallet's menu itself is just a HTML file, so I can plug it into my phone and just open this HTML file. I was just about to order it but I found out that when you unseal it, you are only able to transfer WHOLE money,  stored in the wallet. No custom amounts. That truly makes OpenDime a single-use piggy bank.

Are there any alternatives that I can plug into my phone? I dont want to use any App (especially as Im a Blackberry user and theres simply none compatible or fully working)?
Anything using HTML or anything simmilar?

In order to use a HW wallet with a phone, there has to be some sort of common communication protocol. A Trezor will connect to a phone with a proper cable (using USB OTG) but I would doubt that your Blackberry will support the necessary protocols and have a functional wallet app ready. If you were to use an Android device, then you would find existing support for Mycelium (http://doc.satoshilabs.com/trezor-apps/mycelium.html).

Using HTML would be quite difficult; there would need to be a way to perform two-way communication (transactions to device, signed transactions back) for it to have any functionality beyond a single-use container.

Well, the only problem with OpenDime is the fact it doesnt allow to withdraw custom amounts. As far as I know you can deposit and withdraw money to it all the time (even after unsealing), but it doesnt allow you to choose how many BTC do you want do send. If such a simple procedure trough HTML works on PC, there Should be no problem with plugging it via OTG USB to phone. You just cant select a custom amount, what makes it sort of useless for me - especially for the price of 35$ per 3 pcs.

If you are going to get into using bitcoin with your phone you are going to have to ditch the Blackberry and get an Android phone. The better the phone and more recent the Android OS the more options you have.

If you have an Android phone that supports OTG connection you can download Mycelium wallet and use a Ledger Nano S or Trezor hardware wallet to manage the private keys. Sorry but that's the way it is.

Damn, looks like there's a lot of expenses coming up for me then. Well, if there's no other option..

Thanks!
