Title: Whats your setup? Hobbyist Miners
Post by: SlyFoxy12 on May 02, 2013, 08:08:08 AM
As I'm a hobbyist miner and I need to make a few posts I thought I'd make an effort to see what other hobbyists use. Mine:

2 AMD 6950 graphics cards I got off Ebay
and a beast of a computer I built a year or two back running Xubuntu.

Used to generate around 1BTC a week (I've had some issues with OS instability and cards overheating lately), I don't pay power bills as my work was kind enough to let me rig up a machine in their server room.

Hoping to get on the ASIC bandwagon at some point but not overly worried about this gold rush atm, seems a lot of people have faith in the things.

I have 15 BFL Singles mining away with 15 SC upgrades dancing in my dreams. Every email I get I hope it is BFL asking me to send them in for upgrade.

Wow, I really envy you guys who found some free power! In Denmark, the kWh rate is about 0.36 USD, so it's pretty expensive to mine over here, haha.

I turned out to have a Radeon 5850/Core i5-750 SFF PC lying around, so that's been setup for mining. Definitely going to upgrade this though: removing the (albeit well cooled) SFF case, and buying more GPU's. (Too bad those PCI-E riser cables seem so.. rare?)

There seems to be a lot of hype around the Radeon 7950, but man, that card is just insanely expensive. Over here, a used 5850 is around 1/4th the price - and maybe I'm just lucky, but they seem rather easy to get hold of as well.

I've struggled to find any 5 series cards in the UK, there's quite a lot of 6 series cards flying around though on Ebay, considering expanding but I'd rather not if these new ASIC miners do change the game that much, I'd rather save some BTC for a 2nd Gen or a second hand 1st Gen.

Are your FPGA quite stable to run then?

Im mining with 4 X 7850 / 2 x 7770 / 2x 7950

Makes about 3000 KHashs consuming 1,5 KW/h :-D

Im payinf 0,28 $ per Kw/h, so at the moment its really worth the effort.

What types of chassis do you use for those machines (and perhaps in particular, the quad-GPU one)?

I have a well-ventilated SFF case for my single-GPU system, but I guess I'll have to use milk crates or something when it reaches 4..

I just got into mining in the last few weeks, more as a hobby than to make serious money. I built a dedicated mining rig with a single 7870 that gets about 412 Mh/sec and just added a 6670 to my "server" PC which yields an additional 110 Mh/sec or so. I did a lot of research beforehand and still ended up spending more money than I'd intended/hoped, but that's another story that's not terribly interesting. All told, I probably spent $300 on video cards and another $200 on miscellaneous components for the dedicated miner.

I'm not sure what my power consumption is, but I have a Kill-A-Watt meter that I'll hook up at some point to measure it accurately. I also just confirmed my pre-order for a BFL Little Single, so I hopefully won't be left in the dust too badly when the ASIC revolution drives the difficulty through the roof. At that point I'll probably repurpose my GPU's for Litecoin mining. I placed by BFL order before the price hike, so that makes me feel a bit more like all this gear might eventually pay for itself.

I think D1rk D1ggler is talking about having 15 BFL FPGA units, not ASIC devices.

Does it pay to mine LTC for BTC? Isn't there a fee to exchange one to the other, and doesn't that negate any gains you make?

Just started this week, for fun.

Running a 7850, 2xGTX560 OC (bought over a year ago for my gaming rig), and messing around with a 7950.

Debating on building a full blown rig with 3x 7950's....Of course, I probably "need" another gaming rig anyway.

.....riiiight...

Still messing around with the thought of just ordering 2 Butterfly lab jalepenos, which would be cheaper than 2 more 7950's anyway. But, it would take time for them to get to me.

I had two 5870's overclocked to 900mhz (would frequently stop mining to play League of Legends) and a 6870 mildly overclocked. Was getting 1.1Ghash/second but I stopped after the difficulty rose past it being worth the electricity cost. Damn ASIC's...

Just got together a 3x Sapphire 7950 rig, mined only a small time, PSU is having issues. Just
ordered another one, will be back at it on Tuesday, I hope. :P

Out of the box it was getting 1800kH/s easily. Some tweaking will take it closer to 2000kH/s assuming
the new PSU works correctly this time.

I tried mining with my daughter's computer for a while as mine is elsewhere, unfortunately it doesn't do very well and gets so hot that it blue screens.  Nvidia cards don't seem to do so well at this and I doubt that it's covered the price of the electricity, and this one's card blows the heat out inside the case so it just makes everything overheat.  Maybe I need a truckload of ASIC machines instead....

Core2Quad Extreme QX9650
GTX580
4GB DDR3-1600
Fire probably coming out of it if I keep trying, not worth it.

Rig 1: ~1.4 ghash/s
1 - 5970
1 - 5850
1 - 5830

Rig 2: ~1.3 ghash/s
2 - Gigabyte 7970

All the cards except the 5970 are powered off of some server power supply I paid $15 for.

At first I had an nVidia GT 450 which was getting about 42Mh/s.  Then I bought a 7870 and now get 425 Mhs.  Power usage is about 260 Watts on my system.  I used to keep two computers running all the time, now I turned off one which was using 180 Watts and now I use less electricity on a net basis.  I started with LTC, but now for me BTC is more profitable.  Every now and then MNC, FTC and TRC are better the mine, for short periods of time.  Seems like that is only a few hours though.

Currently I'm using mine and my daughter's (when she's not on it) computers but am intending to build a dedicated mining rig because although it might not quite cover the electricity bill it will heat the house too, saving on the gas bill.  Apart from that hopefully my BFL 7GH/s Miner will turn up one day......

My machine:
QX9650 Core2Quad Extreme, 4GB DDR3-1600, Nvidia GTX580 running CudaMiner which makes it twice as fast as with CGMiner because Nvidia cards aren't great with OpenCL integer maths

My daughter's machine, on which she's clocked up over 1000 hours playing The Sims 3, another 500 on Garry's Mod and an unknown but large amount of time on Minecraft:
Phenom II X3 710, 4GB DDR2-800, ATI Radeon HD5870

Just between these two computers they're putting out enough heat that my gas central heating system hasn't come on once yet and it's almost October.  Obviously this feature isn't very useful in summer but in winter heat is not an expensive waste product.  I wish they were quieter though!

I just mine for fun and to see how things perform.

So I mine LTC on my Linux desktop which is a Haswell i5 with a Geforce GTX770 at ~ 200kHash/s. Not really impressive but pleasant for me as a hobby.

I've looked into the power costs and I'm paying roughly $0.28 / kW/h.

I'm looking at some options for a dedicated mining rig but am not yet ready to choose.

I don't really want to invest hundreds into new hardware. So some cheaper 5/6 series Radeon cards combined with a AMD Sempron 145 based system and a motherboard with a minimum of three PCI-e slots would seem to be the best option for me.

But again. I'm still not certain. I just want to mine with a bit more power but don't want to loose to much on power.  ;D

Overclocking my card made about 10% difference, but it gets a lot hotter.  I bought it for gaming, I didn't know anything about mining back then.
