Block size is dinamically adjusted. The only thing it suffers from is the fact that gas cost is not entirely cut off from the ether price. So these dapp developers need to optimise their complex dapps and contracts to reduce the cost. They didn't had to nor bothered to do that before because ether was too cheap, therefore the cost to maintain them was very low, but now they have to.

However, normal transactions are okay-ish, median transaction fee is 8 cents. If you wanna pay less, you can chose lowest fee and pay 1-2 cents or less. However, you can wait from 10seconds to 1-2mins max for confirmation. I usually select lowest fee when i transact.
