Title: Can i plug another GPU on my PSU?
Post by: lautre on May 27, 2017, 06:22:41 AM
Hello,

i have the enermax  etl1000ewt-m and it have 6 pcie plug

i'm at 940-960W at the wall plug actually with 5 GPU, each of my gpu are using about 100W in afterburner. not sure what else is using the 450W missing... i have only a celeron 2820 on it and i don't use it to mine..

Not sure if i can plug another GPU on it :s

thanks =)

Hi,

You should have like 20% reserv, if you already pull 950W from wall and have 1000W PSU, doesn't end well here.

I would strongly recommend against it. The VRAMS in gpu consume power too and they add up. Anyway it is always advisable to run your PSU at 80% capacity for best efficiency and for give it some room for accommodating spikes. By adding one more GPU your rig will go over 1000w and will lead to power shutdown by the PSU, though there are protection circuits I am note sure your's have one. So please dont add more to it.

ha thanks, i'm going to try to reduce power draw for the rig.

Well, it was totally not recommended but i don't have another PSU and i like to gamble so now i'am powering 6x 480 and dual mining with that 1000W PSU, 1095-1105W on the plug.

i'm waiting for the psu to explode but it seems fine for now, running for about 36hours.

my psu is rated  82% efficiency 1180W (1000W), i have 80w left but i don't want to push it too much..  :o 8)

hopefully it will not destroy my other hardware..

That's not what 82% efficiency means - good luck, I really hope you don't burn your house down. But if you do, well, you're kind of asking begging for it.

lautre:
With 0.82 efficiency and 960W load at the wall plug, we can approx. calculate your load on the lower voltage side to be about 788W.

With 0.82 efficiency and 1105W load at the wall plug, we can approx. calculate your load on the lower voltage side to be about 906W.

You are really close to the max!

You need to learn more about these numbers and basic electronics.

1000W is the absolute max. you can have load with this PSU and it is not recommended to put 100% load with ATX power supplies.
Server grade power supplies in the other can handle 100% load written in specs because they are made for it.

Hi,

if you are at ~ 950 at Wall, you should not plug in anything else on top !

Maybe you should give a complete configuration of your rig,
the glas blow is actually on maintenance ^^ .

:P

Anyone that asks this question already knows the answer. No. Or, yes, if you want to risk starting a fire.

Play it safe. PSUs are much more efficient between 50%-75% of max load anyway.

Also, if you can convert to 240v, do it.

hey no you are wrong,

i have found on the internet that for a 80% rated PSU, When PC is drawing all the power it can from the PSU, it will receive 1000W and a Kill-A-Watt would measure 1200W at the wall.
mine is 85(50%load) to 82%(100% load)  so it's 1180

i have bought a 3$ fire alarm of ebay  anyway:D

and yes Cashen i'm on 240 already.

1200W PSU are 200€+ while this one is 105€..

short term use for the max.  the psu can not do 100 % 1180 watts is the max it can do short term

so 1180 x .8 = 944 watts max long term 24/7/365   at the moment you do 950 so to add any more and run 24/7/365  is moron stupid cheap.

good luck with it.

Move your wife and kids out of the house if you're going to run your PSU like that. If you want to risk a fire at least make sure nobody else is going to get hurt. You can't fudge it with electric or math --- if you run it like that for long you will ruin hardware at the very least.

Hey look bro - I'm just trying to be nice, burn the house down and injure everyone in the house, ignore all the advice.

Have a nice day.

Don't worry guys I think he is trolling you all. I started reading the thread too and all the advice that was given was correct, I at first though he was a legitimate newbie asking for advice until I got this this replay:

Well he either wants your advice or doesn't and seeing how he is ignoring everything and actually arguing with the advice he has already been given, it is time to let it rest.

1000w/ 0.82 = ~1220w @wall.

Overloaded power supplies don't burn houses, it would be quiet forum if they did. Must say that if I were you I would have invested to more suitable psu before that last gpu.

Right now, if one is after max profits, efficiency calculators can be thrown out the window.

Your best (and cost effective) bet would be to rather buy a small (may be 450 W) power supply and use it to power a couple of cards in the rig.

A 450 W power supply will cost around 4 times less than a modular 750 W supply and approx 8 times cheaper than a 1000 W one.

Well it is not really a good thing to be gambling with... The real thing that I am wondering is why are you pulling so much at the wall? It is possible to get 6x 480's safely under the 1000W. I think you need to do some bios updates and also what are your MSIafteburner settings? I would say that it is better to simply mine ETH or ETC than try to do dual mining on a 1000W PSU. Some of my 6x rigs with 1000W PSU pull about 850 at the wall and that is only slightly above that 80% limit.

Did you try adding a new 450 Watt PSU to the system? Do post back with results if you did.

this is true, don't know what they are about when they said that a psu can fire up an house, but my corsair rm 1000, can shut down itself and restart if you go beyond the limit, they have self protection no need to worry about

Don't trust Afterburner "wattage" readings - as I recall it ONLY looks at wattage being drawn from the PCI-E power connectors, or it might just be VERY inaccurate.

It IS possible for a PS to cause a home fire - but very unlikely, unless you're running an open rig with any cardboard or wood nearby, at which point it becomes unlikely not VERY unlikely.
It would generally need for one or more of the CONNECTORS or CABLES to overload, fry, and start the fire - an internal PS short would tend to be contained by the case of the PS.

Based on the "at the wall" reading you posted, I would NOT attempt to connect a 6'th CPU to that power supply.

Running a non-server PS at 100% generally WILL cause issues over time - server PS are specifically designed and RATED for 24/7 operation, even the GOOD quality consumer PS are generally not (though if you keep the ambient cool enough they MIGHT handle it for quite a while).

ALL current ATX-type PS also lose efficiency as you load them down much past 50% - but that's a fairly minor factor, usually in the 2% ballpark from 50% load to 100% load.

I believe that an 80% efficient at 100% load power supply rated at 1000W can pull 1250W at the wall and burn 250W of that in wasted heat energy while supplying the 1000W it is rated to supply to components. A 90% efficiency at 100% load could pull up to 1111W at the wall while supplying 1000W to components. These are general numbers not exact for any given power supply.
