Title: Rate Of Bitcoin Loss
Post by: triforcelink on June 19, 2011, 09:06:56 AM
Does anyone have some theories or data to show how many bitcoins are being permanently lost? The other day I lost .02 bitcoins while playing around with different wallets. It's not much, but if it happens to a lot of people, that can be a decent sum of bitcoins vanishing out of existence on a regular basis.

I wonder, if it's 20,000 already....how many will it be in 10 years? How can this be fixed or resolved for the future?

In the future, when it reaches 21,000,000, can anything be done to break free the lost bitcoins for public consumption again? By the time it reaches 21,000,000 in circulation, approx. 2,000,000 bitcoins could have vanished!

Maybe someone needs to start a bitcoin lost and found. Or a bitcoin adoption agency for aborted bitcoins.

By people reading the documentation in front of them instead of jumping in head first with no understanding.

That said, much like any other software program or new technology, there is documentation, which appears to be extremely well hidden on the bitcoin ... on the very page you download the client.

So well hidden in fact that the first 3 items on the page are:

  • What is Bitcoin?
  • FAQ
  • Wiki / Help

and even MORE hidden, if you click the help page the first 3 menu items are:

  • Introduction
  • Getting started
  • Securing your wallet

I agree that something must be done immediately to protect the public.

How dare they place all the information you could ever need to know about safety and security right in front of your eyes on the main pages!

And more importantly, how dare they assume that you will educate yourself before using any new software or technology!

Other than a meager stash of 20 or so i keep on a USB drive, i don't really hold Bitcoins for very long (don't judge, i need the USD for more hardware and start up capital for some projects), so I've been lucky enough not to lose any yet.

I am sure that fees don't count. I never lost a wallet, not even a empty one.
