Title: external GPU to Laptop mining Post by: mrgoldy on May 27, 2017, 05:18:49 PM I've been offered a free GTX 970
I have a laptop, Asus ROG G750JW, i7 4700HQ 2.4GHz, 24GB RAM, GTX 765M, all sorts of ports Is it possible that I can keep the GTX 970 open air, get a PSU for it, run a cable back to my existing laptop, and control it/mine it from my laptop? If yes, any instructional/tutorial on that setup? would it use much of my laptop resources? If no, sorry I'm the new guy. If you can hook the VC to your laptop, sure you can do both. Title: Re: external GPU to Laptop mining Post by: QuintLeo on May 27, 2017, 11:39:41 PM As a general rule, it's cheaper to just build a mining rig that to buy one of those "use a PCI-E GPU on a laptop" adapters - and you get to keep the laptop available for doing other stuff with!

need an engineers help to see if this project can work, might help a lot of people out there Alienware M11x R2 Mini PCI-E to PCI-E x1 cable PCI-E 1X to 4 PCI-E 16X (the expansion card of 1 PCI-E 1X with 4 USB to 4 raisers) PSU 1350w Platinum 4 1080ti (before installing the 1080ti, i will test with a 4850) https://www.ebay.com/itm/High-Speed-FPC-Cable-Mini-PCI-E-to-PCI-E-Express-X1-USB-Riser-Card/391302612634?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 https://www.ebay.com/itm/PCI-E-1X-to-4-PCI-E-16X-Slots-Riser-External-Adapter-PCI-E-Port-Card-Cable-Board/232539417964?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m2749.l2649 after watching the failure of this guy, I decided to change the cable and adapter to this one... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MYWriFMQH_o https://cryptomined.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_373_319&products_id=320&zenid=mnrnhf13bt7hjlk7130kkv3tc2 not really sure if will hold up 3 GPU, we are talking about 900w with an adapter and PSU. I'm affraid to burn something Title: Re: external GPU to Laptop mining Post by: abuzubu on February 07, 2018, 05:45:19 PM anybody tried that. I am looking external gpu for mining. but i need someone experienced.
pls pm me if anybody tried. Title: Re: external GPU to Laptop mining Post by: Juggar on February 07, 2018, 05:56:18 PM Realistically you will need a Thunderbolt port and a compatible eGPU enclosure that would work with your laptops thunderbolt revision (1, 2 ,3 ).
Anything else like using the wi-fi mini PCI-e slot is generally not going to work out. Lots of laptop BIOS have a whitelist and I doubt you be able to get 1 GPU to work let alone 3+. Essentially you are MUCH better off buying a 3 PCI express slot embedded mobo like this one if you want a cheap miner: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157616&ignorebbr=1 Title: Re: external GPU to Laptop mining Post by: abuzubu on February 07, 2018, 08:07:19 PM Realistically you will need a Thunderbolt port and a compatible eGPU enclosure that would work with your laptops thunderbolt revision (1, 2 ,3 ). Specially a GPU using EXP GDC https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJabK8TfyOA if it works for gaming, then works for mining. Keep in mind that it's 1 GPU only, I'm looking to attach a riser with 3 or 4 PCI-E 1x then hook up the 16x riser. |
