Not being around to claim my NEM stake when the tokens were send to the BCT inbox. That one cost me dearly at todays valuations. Got to love stakes being retracted.

selling nem early
not selling much quark
selling eth at 35
selling evergreen before last pump
mintpal
selling too many btc at 500

that is way over a million dollars of mistakes just there.

still never focus on the bad trades be thankful for the good ones.

I think the big surprises are yet to come.

I can survive and am used to surviving on very little so no big worries. Crypto still gave me more than I ever imagined I would have.

You get better at trading with time. It's almost like unconsciously you pick up some vibes about projects

Ok where to start....

1) in 2014 I had approx 60 000 blackoin that I did not sell during the mega pump, I could have gained 30-36 BTC at that time (easy to say after)

2) Last year if I kept all my ETH I had mined instead of selling them to paym my rig I would have over 200 ETH....

3) I sold my ESP at sub 1 sat , could have made 16 BTC last month

But oh well it's fun nonetheless!

But it ain't hurting, because I did not put real money so do I really loss something? I don't think so, I learned a lot!

Sold my 5,000 NEM that bought from 800 satoshis for 1,200 satoshis since the price back in that day are almost stable and no movements for half a year that's why I think the price will ever back again at 500 satoshis but it didn't happened. Recently NEM got it's ATH at 13,000 satoshis and now playing at 9,000 satoshis.

That is really doubtful. Now Im holding again around quantity but the price I bought was 7,000 satoshis. Expensive but I don't want to bet late again to avoid regret. I consider the amount I spend as loss so that I will just let it go without realizing that it will give more profit to me.

I am not sure that i can call those as a loss because i did have my profit while selling those coins ,purchased ETH during the initial phase and sold everything when the price touched $9 for the first time, for me it was a good decision at that time because there was a time ETH was having its issues but considering the current price it is a big loss. :)

I can't stand gambling. I downloaded that "my vegas" app at the suggestion of some co-workers who have 250K gold coins and after a couple of hours wasted I'm up to a whopping 300 gold coins.. makes me wonder how much of their life they waste playing that crap... those games are so silly I have to mute the sound because they play on people's psychology, making them sound like winners when they broke even on a spin, lol.   If I could download a bot to play the game on windows for me, that's how I'd do it. lol  That's what I did when these same co-workers got me into Clash of Clans, which I quit when I maxed out Town Hall 7 after seeing how much of my life I'd have to waste to make further progress.  There's a reason I'm good at cryptos and the stock market.. because I spend spare hours researching that and not playing these time sink games that serve to waste one's life away.

After watching the free money drain down to nothing in 5 minutes, it makes me wonder how people can even get into gambling... at least the machines. If you're good at poker, blackjack, or have a lot of knowledge about sports or horse racing, that's different. A Milwaukee talk show guy named Mark Belling is into horses and posts his picks on the web.. he's gotten a few really big long odds winners in the last year which could have netted a person several thousand dollars on a 20 dollar bet. That's skill. Sitting at a slot machine, that's just flushing money down the toilet.

My biggest lost was definitely Josh Garza's fucking Paycoin scam. Second biggest was pbmining. Third is me being a dumbass and running random wallets on my main computer left and right without sandbox or VM and getting fucked by a malware years ago thinking it wouldn't happen to me.

Learned my lessons on all these fronts; not trusting anything remotely centralized (paycoin, cloud mining) ever since and always only run wallets in VM or in a restricted sandbox.

your loss is 100 sats per token. everything else is theoretical. most wouldn't hold until the top.

Poker, Horse racing and all that only works, because there are people who lose and people who win. If everybody was a pro, nobody would be able to do more than break even.

My biggest loss… well, counting possible future wins (apparently we do), I had 3100 Stratis, which I sold for around 0.4 BTC. It's around 7 BTC right now.

But looking at it like this is living in the rear view mirror. If I added all the trades which could have been better, I would be up like 1000% of what I'm actually up. That doesn't seem to be a good way to look at things.

Could have, should have, would have doesn't matter.

Now that would be 126 BTC today but I don't care. It's not just absolutely pointless to get stuck on what if's, that money at the time was very very valueable to me.

I think we should stick to realised trades and not what if's.

Invested in ETC thinking that I'm investing in ETH lol, can't remember the exact amount but it was around 50% of my investment as I though I have invested in ETH and made a big mistake by not checking the acronym.

I have bought many shitty coins but none of them was like ICN which made me a good profit and left me a good taste to invest in ICO, but until now none of the ICOs after ICN were much successful as them.

I'm too much afraid to invest in altcoins now especially in top coins in poloniex because everything goes red when I invest :(.

My biggest lost with crypto is buying a lame alt coin in ICO stage, after being promised with great development and a lot of implementation site, the coin become a failure and nobody want it, the other is when I was a newbie I am not really patience in waiting for the eth price to go up and I sell it for a low a price and now the price is up 1000%

I had about $60 worth of Steem on Steemit and must have written down the password wrong, I am still auto-signed in but I cant log in on any other PC or transfer the money without the password.

Not a massive loss but slightly annoying.

At present, in the past 2 weeks I lost almost .03 BTC :) but it is only on market value since I did not sell my coins yet. I am holding it until now, for I know it will bounce back later on. I bought it in its highest  price, not knowing i  that its already starting to dump. It was my mistake, now my funds are stuck with it now in Polo.

I haven't really lost since I am in the black, but I have sold way too early. Most recently I bought ETH at 40 and selling at 178 was a mistake.  It's gaining a lot today as BTC is dropping. I'm not sure what to make of that. Maybe the lower price it more attractive to new investors.  I'll just hope there is a big dip on profit taking and buy back in.

In case you're using Chrome try Manage Passwords from settings or ChromePass which reads all your "encrypted" passwords.

My biggest loss is in ripple, I buy 0,0002150 and sell all at 0,0001000. My analyze says it will go up so I keep buying ripple but unfortunately the price go down, I cutloss and have loss almost 20% from my btc. It's hard to believe because that's my first trade and make me frustration. Now I try to fix my strategy because loss is bad experience, hope not happen again. Have a nice day.

Nah I'm on firefox.

I think its in a notepad file on my broken desktop somewhere, and the hard drives in it are fine its just a motherboard issue, so when I get that fixed I'm pretty sure I'll be able to get it back anyway.

My biggest lost when I was trading came when I was a complete noob in the world of bitcoin and after buying some bitcoin with the intention to use it I saw that the price got lower and I lost the equivalent of 44 dollars, since I was a noob I sold as fast as I could without realizing that is just the way things work in bitcoin.

Thats a newbie mistake most of us have done in our early days. Stupider than that I have once bought Bitcoin for a higher price and after some time I felt the price was increased, but the problem was I had misunderstood the whole graph, long story short, I lost some 50-60$. Learnt lesson.

My biggest loss to date was about 0.1btc although I have made quite some small amount but the largest amount to date at one goal is that. But I have learnt my lessons that knowing the right time to buy and sell is the soul of any trading activities and that's where the secret of this who will win and those who will lose their investment which is something I have made as a point of duty to always focus on.

I have too many losses, 40 LTC when they went to 40 bucks each but I had sold for 3 bucks because we were out of work. 30 BTC worth of QBK that were stolen by STEPSCOIN DEVS, other btc that got stolen from me and 1k Bitcoin plus that I had sold long time ago for 12 btc but if I had kept for two years would have made 140 BTC. So yes many painful losses I have had, too many to count now.  :'(

I don't want to mention alt coins as i think they still have a chance but my biggest was investing a total of .08 dollars on an altcoin. The project team had projectd many possibilities for the team but it out to be a bust. Now, am not saying that was a scam but man the price just went down during the time i bought it. Also i dont' want to mention prices and a lot of it's investors tried to compensate the loss and the team had to do something to at least show a good future for the project.

My biggest lost in cryptocurrencies was when my laptop corrupted due to virus from flash drive, my wallet was gone and I can't recovered it. If I remember maybe it's around $15-$20 and in my part it was high amount, lesson learned I always provide back-up for all my wallet.

Never bought them back LOL! Have made big gains elsewhere but they don't measure up to this loss...

I have bought at the top and my BTC's at the end were almoust decimated that day.  Immediately after CloakCoin came and saved me from from my economic demise, a was on edge, to sell what is left of my BTCs.
I will not mention it losses on Mintpal, and few others scamy exchanges.

Damn. That's probably what most people did - sold early ;D

For me it's buying at $1000 in 2013 and not selling at the all time high and taking the logical profit. But instead got greedy and held even though the price was crashing. Eventually I got impatient of waiting for an additional pump and sold it at half the price i bought it at. Resulted in a 4k loss.

If i held that for 4 years and sold now, i would have still made 2.7x on my investment. It's crazy how bitcoin can rise and rise.

According to the prices today, if a kept my bitcoins i'd be up thirty to sixty K

Losing bitcoin due to software or hardware difficulties and being scammed? at least five k

how about you?

I have bought and earned many different(shit)coins and mostly in yobit because I thought those coins will be very successful.

but ended holding and sometimes selling for almost nothing, I think that the total amount in bitcoin would be around one which at that time didn't cost a lot like 300$ but now thats almost 10x.

I think the biggest loses I have made is when I hard of bitcoin in 2012 when it price is below $100 I refused to invest and put about $1300 in binary option trading and lose the whole investment. I always see my not investing into bitcoin earlier than now as a lost to me.

lol, lost 8 btc at satoshidice or something back when they were maybe $100 each.  Felt bad back then but now...damn.
Lost another 20 bitcoin or so playing poker when they were like $8.  Sold a bunch at $8...

The list goes on, hahaha.

I could't agree more with this.  I found this to be a valued contribution to my knowledge in bitcoin security.

Mine was Ethereum. I lost about 5 - 10% of my investment the second time I bought some.. my first time was successful.
I bought at the wrong time when it quickly moved from 120—190 and then moved back down. I panicked and sold at 150 dollar.

My biggest loss with cryptocurrencies is selling Bitconnect. It was may 25. I sold my coins at 5 mBTC. If I had them now every coin can worth more than 14 mBTC. rising in the price start just I sold them. I'm so sad because I had hold them about 3 months and  I sold them in the worst time.

If you sell your coins early that does not mean that you will end up in a loss,if you let go of a coin then all the valuation after that are just hypothetically nothing because there is nothing you can do and you really cannot count your losses with those assessment .

Having bought Litecoin at 10 EUR at the end of 2013 or beginning of 2014, holding during the Huobi/BTCChina (can't remember) pump to 16 EUR and watching it plumet to 3-4 EUR. Stayed there for three years, but I kept holding. Noticed there are always fluctuations between 3,5 and 4 EUR. Decided after three years of bagholding to recover my loss by swingtrading on those fluctuations, so sold at 4 EUR one evening and put a limit buy at 3,5........... which never hit because that evening I sold was the evening before the BIG SEGWIT PUMP TO 35 EUR.
That happened to me because I didn't really follow cryptonews a few months ago, was out of the loop and a complete beginner. Learned a lot in just a few months and now I keep up with news and follow other people on Twitter (and realized how little I knew about crypto, a lot has changed since 2013-2014 when I was in the loop).

Plot twist: What makes this story from ultimate bad luck to a huge success story... a little later the Ripple pump started and also the ETC pump. I figured, hey I should just buy a random coin and see what happens. So I put the fiat I got from selling my LTC at a huge loss in... Stellar Lumen! And just one day later it started pumping x20. My profits were massively higher than if I were to stay in LTC and magically called the top to sell.

Sounds like most people have had their biggest loss from selling too early, but generally we shouldn't count those as a loss because most people still sold at a profit. If we are then I will say my biggest loss is not going all in several years ago but waiting on the sidelines until recently.

Hay MoonWhale do you mind sharing the details of that happened with the wallet to lead you to the loss and are you the only one and how did that affect the moon price and what did they do to fix it?

Title: Re: Your biggest loss with cryptocurrencies?
Post by: MoonWhale on June 12, 2017, 12:31:38 PM
I think it was because I mined (briefly) with the rpcpassword not set (why do they not force you to do this?)

Anyway, I'm not actually sure, but I later put a billion moon in there and kept the wallet offline for months and months. Then it all dissappeared.

This was may wallet address: https://chainz.cryptoid.info/moon/address.dws?2bfkzvCAvvBASYZihFC66QykKiQNz2xgJ4.htm

You can see the thief basically emptied the lot, along with a few other large wallets. Together I think he got a few billion moon which are now basically unspendable, but this address is blacklisted and followed by the whole moon community. Big loss though. It was only worth a few $100 when I bought it (at about 8 litoshi) but now it is at around 5 satoshi, this stings.

Heard of Cryptsy? I guess it happened to a lot of users, and I lost quite a bit of altcoins there, had some decent amount of LiteCoins there, sigh and since it recently shot back up again. I guess no one who have saw that coming, so it wasn't exactly a loss either.

Had a couple of times when I started trading, I bought altcoins that were on the rise, only to find that all of them dropped after days and never got up to that price again. :( Now I am sticking to only a few altcoins, that's all. Rather go for lower risks. :P

I sold all by BTC and LTC on my GDAX and Gemini accounts earlier today after I saw a potential technical breakdown. Got a good enough price on the BTC but did lose $2K on the LTC I bought yesterday. :p  While I was contemplating how we've gone from a 10 billion to 120 billion dollar market cap in a couple of months, I came to realize how silly it was to be so into the cryptos and looked at the risk vs reward ratio, so I took about 66% off the table earlier today.

I could try to put it all into BTC for a technical bounce but GDAX is extremely laggy. Has the bubble burst?  Just a temporary selloff? Ignoring my emotions and looking at a long term technical chart, we have a serious gap to fill. I might be wrong, but I'll take my chances. I'd sell my alts but bitcoin is already down a couple hundred and I don't want to take everything off the table, in case I'm wrong. I still did very well.

Time to concentrate my core holdings into the altcoins I truly think have the best tech:  NEM, Xtrabytes, Pascal... with an honorable mention to Bitbay, Ark, NXT, Ardor because they are cheap. If they were expensive I'd sell them as well. Actually I don't hold any NXT or Ardor.
