Title: Ledger Nano S or Trezor? Why?
Post by: johndoe784r on June 01, 2017, 02:28:07 AM
Ledger Nano S or TREZOR? Why?

If you feel this has been hacked to death please let me know, and I apologize in advance.

I realize there is a third 'good' option and that is KeepKey - but KeepKey uses TREZOR's sources and TREZOR has been around longer (as I understand it KeepKey is a port of the TREZOR’s code and firmware) so for all intents and purposes and for ease of discussion I'd like to explore either the Ledger Nano S or the TREZOR.

Also, does anyone know anything about the 'new release' version of the TREZOR that is coming out and/or a possible or estimated ETA?

Ledger Nano S   Released: 2016
KeepKey      Released: 2015
TREZOR      Released: 2013

Security? Privacy? Leave them plugged in all the time or not?

 ???

Thanks all!  8)

Trezor 2 is not expected until the end of this year. I use both. I probably use Trezor more than Nano S because I can use it with one hand, while the Nano S takes two. Trezor has a one year warranty while Nano S is warrantied for two years. If you like to carry your hardware wallet with you to use with your phone the Nano S is smaller and tougher than Trezor: there is a video on YouTube of a guy running over his Nano S with his car and still works fine. I don't recommend you try running over a Trezor:) I would recommend you buy both and see which works best for you.

Thanks MNDan and BitcoinNewsMagazine,

I will get the Nano S for now as I like the portability and durability of the Ledger - but I plan on getting the Trezor 2 when it comes out and will evaluate that vs. the Nano S then.

Thanks for your suggestions and input  :)

Kind regards,

-jd

Trezor does not look appealing at all...IMHO the Nano S looks a lot more appealing but of course something flashy would more likely catch a thieving eye so that is something to think about.   ;D  I purchased my Nano S from www.gotcryptowallet.com (http://www.gotcryptowallet.com) because they had it in stock and is a cheaper price.  Overall, it all comes down to your preference, they're both quality products.

I've had a Nano s for quite some time but not used it much and I also just got a Trezor recently but I don't think they're anything special. Trezor actually seems very cheap and flimsy and I've got a feeling it's only a matter of time before it cracks or breaks and that would be much more likely if you're taking it around any where. The Ledger is much more robust and will almost certainly last a lot longer.

Trezor 2 is not expected until the end of this year. I use both. I probably use Trezor more than Nano S because I can use it with one hand, while the Nano S takes two.

I find it's much easier and quicker to put the pin in though compared to the Trezor.

I feel that both have similar features and security. But I prefer Ledger Nano S because of its design and steel casing. I don’t plug it in all the time, I plug in only when I need to use it.

In terms of cost alone, ledger nano s surely wins. But more than that, the system interface of the nano looks even cleaner and simpler than the other 2. In terms of security, they're both hardware wallets, they're not meant to be online, differences should not be that significant.

I'd go for ledger nano.

Trezor looks cooler, but is kind of old by now. It could use a new design. This is not a comment against its security, just the looks.

Trezor 2 is shipping by the end of this year. Major design improvement, larger colour touchscreen etc. Will not obsolete present Trezors at all, just a step forward. No estimates on cost but you can expect a slightly higher price than the present generation. Or perhaps SatoshiLabs will continue to sell Trezor Gen 1 at a reduced price:)

For those reading along here I simply suggest you don't get "stuck" because you can't make a decision.  They are both great products.  While I use Trezors that in no way takes anything from the Ledgers.  As of this post BTC are basically in the 4500 dollar range.  So if you own some full coins these might just save your bacon some day.

Just get both and give them a whirl, the important part is to get any quantity of your BTC offline & be 100 percent sure you have the wallet seed accurately recorded and safely stored otherwise you might as well not have either.

i would like to prefer trezor wallet so it is very comfort to me and i like this hardware wallet. here we have to using it for our daily needs. most of the people using trezor they said it is good and secure wallet so for that i would like to use this wallet for my daily needs. in fact trezor looks cool. and it has great features. it has been designed by new design. which device we have to using security is more important so for that trezor device has great security also. and you have to try this device for your use.

I would like to buy a Nano S, but how can I be sure that they not know my private key? I know that any user have never been hacked, but howcan I know for sure that the creators could not make the keys predictable?

- You can review the source code
- You can wipe the device and generate a "new" seed as many times as you like
- If you still don't trust it, you can simply generate a 24 word seed offline and restore THAT to the device instead of letting the device generate it for you

i know that maybe I'm just being paranoic, but bitcoin price will increase and I plan to hold it for very long term... then I can not stop thinking about if it is really safe or not. And if there is a software to monitor or transmit the data. Finally we have to trust the software manufacter. Maybe they are just waiting bitcoin to skyrocket and them clean everyone funds.  ;D
