Title: bitcoin exchanges?
Post by: phishphood on May 03, 2013, 11:32:23 PM
Hey all im stuck in this newbie forum for now hoping to get out.  Does anyone know of any bitcoin exchanges with reasonable fees?  Bitinstants fees seem a little high recently.  Ive used exchanges such as bitfloor and ziggap when they were still around but im at a loss for a source of coins now.  Thanks in advance for the help!

Where in the world are you?

I'm in the UK and it's a pain trying to buy BTC as none of the banks to my knowledge even acknowledge BTC's existence! FWIW, I found an article suggesting using www.virwox.com (http://www.virwox.com) to exchange £ (paid through paypal) to Linden $, then Linden $ to BTC. Not an elegant solution, and quite costly with the fees (Paypal + 2 exchange fees) but it worked straight away.

There's small limits to begin with, but it might be what you're looking for.

Of course, if anyone else knows a better way, please let me know!

definitely btc-e, but its mostly about finding an exchange that trades your currency. In Australia, there are bitpiggy and bitinnovate, both are reliable.

mtgox.com has bank transfer.

it works.

I use https://coinbase.com (https://coinbase.com) in the us to cash out bitcoins to my bank account.  Very low fee and it posts usually 3 days or so to my account, pretty fast.  I use BTC-E for trading, put everything in BTC and send that over to coinbase.

Plus the BTC price on coinbase is usually a bit higher than it is on BTC-E so nice little bonus there.

mtgox deposits are fast via wire transfers.

I am curious as to find out why is it so difficult to buy coins there in england? why does the bank need to know you are buying bitcoins?

It's not that the banks need to know, it's just that there isn't a mechanism in place to exchange directly from GBP to BTC. Everything I've seen is from USD or EUR to BTC. So us Brits have to suffer the pain of 2 exchange fees, or do an international bank transfer which negates any profit we might otherwise make.  :(

If anyone has a better way, please let me know!

I typically ignore the trollbox - although it is good for a laugh every now and then.

You may want to spread your funds across 2 or 3 exchanges rather than just use the cheapest. Exchange failures are quite common and it is far better to lose access to 33% of your funds than 100%.

I agree spreading funds to different exchanges is a good idea. BTC-e is the most entertaining. I use Bitstamp cuz it has Ripple which I think is going to be an important tool in transferring funds/credit in the future.

I definitely agree on spreading them across various trading platforms. Alot safer and can be easily manageable.

@FeatherLite

You can find the FTC prices at https://vircurex.com/ on the right hand side of the screen (look for FTC)

and https://btc-e.com/exchange/ftc_btc

Getting USD in and out of the exchanges is generally a problem.  You can do a wire transfer but that's a pain.

There are two ways I have used to get around this.

1. Buy Linden Dollars and trade them for BTC, then you can send the BTC to BTC-e
https://www.virwox.com/?drgn=1 (https://www.virwox.com/?drgn=1)

2. Use Coinbase to buy BTC and then send the BTC to BTC-e.

Bitstamp.net (http://Bitstamp.net) is a very good exchange for people in the Eurozone - 0.5% trading fees, 0% fee on SEPA deposits and a 0.9 euro fee on SEPA withdrawals.

Have you tried https://localbitcoins.com to see if you can just meet someone near you and buy them that way?
