Hi,

I have this gaming rig that i mostly use to play games but i was thinking of starting mining with it so would love some advice from the experts here, my pc specifications are

Gigabyte gtx1060 6gb version
core i5-6500 3.3GHz
16GB DDR4 RAM
MSI H110M-PRO-VH PLUS 6th Generation DDR4 MotherBoard (LGA1151, DDR4 2133Mhz)

I don't have to pay for electricity so no bill there.

So, please answer my few queries:
1.) Is it profitable for me to mine cryptocurrency? If yes, which one will suit best for these specifications?
2.)How much is the risk of frying my pc?

I got my start similar to you. Download Nicehash, point it at your bitcoin wallet address and hit the start button.  Earned about $50 dollars after deducting electricity costs, got impatient, cashed out and ordered a 1080 TI. Now I've earned about 350 using the 1080 TI, getting impatient and about to order a second one.

Risk wise, its the about the same as gaming, except you are doing it 24 hours a day. As long as you keep an eye on your temps and make sure you keep good airflow (no clogged fans with dust bunnies etc) you should have no problems

Where the risk steps up is trying to extract every last inch of performance with overclocks, flashing 3rd party bios images, etc.

Modern computer hardware is more durable than you would think. What kills hardware is excess heat and voltage, as long as you keep those in check it's pretty safe to mine. I still have hardware in use from when I began in 2014 and only recently replaced the Dell motherboard I was using, even though it still works. The most common hardware failure is GPU fans, so it's a good idea to keep the GPU fan speed as low as possible and use supplemental fans instead.

Use Afterburner and trim down your powerlimit to 72%, core + 200 and mem + 300 and fan 66%,
this should run very efficient, check power from wall,
your i5-6500 can do crypthonight with 2-3 cores on top!

Use NiceHash miner - it´s the simplest 2 get started.

it doesn't matter what cpu or mobo or anything else, what matter is only the gpu, for gaming i was expecting at least the 1070, every gamers has one, if you can buy that it should give you $150 per month at least

Not to steer this further off topic but I have a brand new 1070. I can proof hit boner-presentation, almost, not really though. I hooked up a brand new EVGA 1070 last night and have been mining all day with a 3 hour outage to Windows update. So far I've made $3.56 using NiceHash and default GPU settings. Projected monthly income at market prices is $139. I don't have power draws.

As a novice I can attempt to answer your questions.

1) I believe mining is profitable right now. I quit my mining and 2013 and never looked back and believe I have lost mucho dinero.
2) Like Vann said, you shouldn't fry your PC. Keep and eye on temps and if you can buy a UPS to protect from power surges.

Thanks all for such wonderful replies, you've been a great help. Now I can start mining without any worries, keeping in mind the things pointed out by you.

Also the atmospheric temperature in my area goes around as high as 47-50 degree Celsius but I keep my pc dust free by time to time cleaning(it's my first gaming rig bought from savings of 8 months as I am a student), the power supply in my country is 220v 50Hz and using Antec 500w psu.

So PanneKopp,  will the settings you specified in the picture above will suit best for me under these specifications? And are there any other points that I should keep in mind?

At your ambient temperatures, I'd use an Afterburner "fan profile" and NOT a fixed setting on the fans, for those days it gets hot - and I would avoid overclocking ANYTHING.

 Make sure the fan profile hits 100% at no higher than 80 degrees C when you set it up, then I'd say have it drop 20% for every 10 degrees C below 80.


 Where the heck are you that you see temps in the 50 C range (122 F for those that don't grok Centigrade)....

I live in Rajasthan in India and this much temperature is normal here during summers, it's 9:30pm now and still the temp is 42degree Celsius.
