Title: Muti-GPU -- Muti-series Mining Rig- Possible?
Post by: go4gonzo on May 04, 2013, 03:42:18 AM
So, I've acquired from varies people some AMD graphics cards, specifically a Sapphire 7770 GHz Edition, Sapphire HD 6870, XFX HD 5850.  Is it possible to install all of the following cards in the same rig and mine with them?

I've heard that it's highly recommended you stick with the same series cards, but is it a necessity? Can I successfully run a 5XXX, 6XXX, and 7XXX series card all on the same mining rig?

I made a half-hearted attempt to get the 7770 and the 6870 to function together, but didn't work.  The 7770 was mining at 217 mh/s and the 6870 @ 34-52 mh/s, which I know isn't correct.

Any thoughts or suggestions? thank you.
 ??? ???

Absolutely, it is possible to mix different series cards in the same computer. But you might encounter occasional issues like what you experienced (sub-part hashrate). Try different (older or newer) drivers. Try running your miner with only 1 card, or only the other card. Do they perform as expected when tested individually?

Thanks.
I tried mining with the 7770 only, which yeided 209-217 MH/s. Tried 6870 only, still got 34-52ish MH/s.  The 6870 may be faulty, so I'm getting another in a few days to check that theory.

Tomorrow, I'm going to try the 5850 and 7770 together and see what happens. I'm leave the 7770 in the rig ONLY because it's actually hashing like it's suppose too.

I'll go from there.

EDIT: I'm using 12.8 and SDK 2.5 atm

I'm running a HD6970, HD7750, HD7770 and HD5870 all in one machine.  Windows 7 running 13.4 drivers.  Works fine.  Noisy and hot, but it works.

They're on an Asus SABERTOOTH 990FX board, and a FX8320 CPU.  Powered off a 1kW Zalman PSU.

:o damn, well that makes me feel better about having a buffet of cards lol and having them run together. Thanks for the info HellDiverUK.

I'm guessing you didn't use dummy plugs ??? after 12.8 right? thanks.

Never found the need to, everything just worked straight off.  :)

Just an update:
I have both 5850 and 7770 running now going full speed.  However, I want to point out that when I first installed and updated the drivers the 5850 was running at 54 MH/s SLOWWWW! what I did was move my monitor plug to the 5850, then back to the 7770 and it started runnning at full speed (280-295 MH/s)  This probably "activated" the card (for lack of better words)

So I'm concluding that I do infact need a dummy plug so I don't need to move the plug back and forth everytime I need to restart.

Catalyst 12.8 SDK 2.5

it's impossible to mine on a 7770 with 2.5 sdk. i dont think you actually have 2.5 sdk installed.

I promise you I have SDK 2.5 installed. Now whether or not it's being utilized is another thing.  You may be correct though, but since it's not affecting my system or mining I'm cool with it.

Thanks for the info.
