Can anybody recommend a desktop wallet (hopefully supported on linux) that doesn't consume a ton of resources? Something like myetherwallet would be great, but it doesn't have to run in a browser.

Currently using armory, but the complete processing of the blockchain whenever you need to use it is becoming a pain.

keep an eye out for fee problems though. a lot of people don't seem to be paying the right fees with it. i don't know if that's down to the program not staying on top of it or the users.

Electrum (https://electrum.org) is excellent.
To install on Linux:
sudo apt-get install python-qt4 python-pip (dependencies)
sudo pip2 install https://download.electrum.org/2.8.3/Electrum-2.8.3.tar.gz

This was an issue with a slightly older version when using dynamic fees, where the fees would be extremely low and the transaction would never go through. It was fixed a while ago though.

there seem to be 5-10 threads a day on r/bitcoin complaining about tiny fees with electrum. maybe it's giving them too much choice.

As other's have suggested, Electrum is the best option for you. Lightweight and easy to used and you can adjust the fees as well. We all know that transaction fees are increasing its like 400 sat/byte right now and you have to manually adjust it in electrum. I myself accidentally send it to my local exchange wallet with a fucking 50 sat/byte  :o. And I was mad at myself for my doing this. But the ever friendly viabtc help me a lot to push my transaction to be included in the next block and I think in 6 hours I got it in my local exchange wallet. So just be mindful of the fees and adjust as necessary.

You can use Electrum or Multibit wallet, these would be best wallet to use it so handy. You can set the fees to low or high as convenient to you and you can the network as wish to transact the bitcoin in the list such as bitpay, blockchain and more...

You can use multiple seed and the multiple wallet in one desktop application. You can find it for linux, windows and android.

the original developer of multibit sold it to keepkey. it's not what it used to be. better to stick with electrum.

the default setting actually gives minimal choices to change the fees and in that case it takes the fee suggestion from the servers, which they give a pretty good suggestion according to that time's state and sets the fee automatically.
it is when they start going in preference and mess with settings that things get ugly :)

i second this. I've been using Electrum for months now and compared to other client or other wallet electrum has the best fee recomendation which allow my transaction to be confirmed as soon as possible. Electrum makes me think that the amount of fee I sent is enough compared to other wallet which recommends a higher fee yet takes too much time to confirm still.

What's the problem Jim sold it to keepkey? Multibit HD still is a very good wallet, though I prefer Electrum too.

And then you ask what version they're on and you get "2.5.x"... ::)

Run the latest version (currently 2.8.3)... Tools -> Preferences -> Fees... turn "Dynamic Fees" on... set "Replace By Fee" to "Always"... Then use the slider on the "Send" tab to 'fine tune' the fee as you desire...

If the whole BTC/kB thing is a bit confusing... tick the "Edit Fees Manually" box and a text box appears next to the slider showing the exact fee that has been calculated. PROTIP: DON'T actually manually edit the fee tho! :P
Don't go anywhere near MultiBit HD at the moment... there is a pretty serious error that has been hitting users lately... some folks are getting a "Password did not unlock the wallet" error when starting up, even though the password is 100% correct...

It's been a known issue for at least 2 to 3 weeks now (https://github.com/keepkey/multibit-hd/issues/982)... no sign of an update as yet... Devs don't seem terribly active...

This is locking people out of their wallets, and because MultiBit uses a somewhat 'unique' BIP32 Derivation Path (m/0'/0), there aren't a lot of choices for alternative wallets that are compatible with MultiBit seeds... the only 2 wallets that are currently know to be compatible are "Breadwallet" (on iOS/Android) and "Simple Bitcoin Wallet (Android)...

Ethereum still the best choice if you are looking for lite weight bitcoin wallet.
There are some other wallet there like multiwallet hd but like other said there are some serious error about the wallet and electrum is oldest wallet that you can't get any problem in linux os.. this is just my opinion and base in my experience..

Electrum or Multibit could be your best bet for lightweight wallet that simply does their job. It could also be used as a cold storage and not just your regular spending wallet, though it needs to be disconnected to the internet.


The issue was fixed in an update already over a week ago now.

A couple of members have already mentioned it but from personal experience electrum is your best option. It's very lightweight and easy to use. But if you're going to store huge amounts of bitcoin you might want to invest in a hardware wallet.
