Title: Huge selloff + Ordering not possible on MtGox
Post by: Bit_Happy on June 19, 2011, 05:40:02 PM
Has MtGox made a public statement about the "Another trade is still in progress, please retry in a few seconds" bugs? Having people unable to buy is a recipe for disaster. Any comments or links to the current status?

mtgox is managed by absolute terrible manager, is mtgox EVER looking at his own exchange and the manipulations being done there?

This is absolute junk

This selloff is due to Mt Gox's terrible setup.  I would have bought 800 coins over the last few minutes if I could have gotten an order in.

Why would anyone sell 261.000 bitcoins for 1 cent instead of cashing out slowly? Makes absolutely no sense.

I was wondering something like this was going on. Look at the volume increase. Last night it was around 50,000. Now it's up to 550,000

Maybe it was similar to that stock market crash where someone accidently added in an extra decimal or something, crashing the market short term.

I just wonder if anybody who had orders in actually received bitcoins.

Personally you gotta be crazy to do anything with mt. gox.

I only hope it's not a hack. If someone managed to break into the database, they could just give themselves millions of coins regardless of the bitcoin client. Then they would be selling numbers in the database instead of coins...

This selloff is due to Mt Gox's terrible setup.  I would have bought 800 coins over the last few minutes if I could have gotten an order in.

I would've bought much more than that...don't get sucked into this crap...the bitcoin market is still relatively lightly traded and someone looking to snap up tons of bitcoins and easily manipulate the market down.  And I think that's precisely what's going on.

I WOULD NOT PUT ANY TRADES ON UNTIL WE HEAR FROM MARK!!! CLEARLY Mtgox has been hacked. What is happening is NOT somebody "dumping" their bitcoins to "cash out". Somebody managed to break into it, and it is playing with the database. We need to wait until Mark (Mtux) has a chance to check this mess.

If you put more orders, it will only mean overloading the system more and more, and more work afterwards to try and weed out good trades from bad trades.

ALSO, PLEASE DO NOT CASH OUT ANY MTGOX USD TO ANYBODY (LIKE BUYING MTGOX USD FOR A MONEY PACK) UNTIL WE HEAR FROM MARK!!

This is an ILLUSION created by a bunch of bots to create panic. DO NOT CONTRIBUTE TO IT!

Because it is the game* on a way to a more stable market - there are winner, there are loser. Lucky for all that had a nicely low bid at the right time. Unfortunately, I had not, but nevertheless great fun watching the market at http://bitcoinity.org/markets :D

So I take it the only people who were able to buy in this huge selloff, were poeple who actually had bid orders placed before this selloff?

Was anyone able to buy it during the selloff.

I got totally screwed here because I am waiting for my dwolla account to deposit my money from my bank account. I did not know dwolla took that long or I would have had money in mt. gox, and would have bought at less than $1.00 because I watched this whole thing unfold.

I think that hackers used a lot of hacked accounts to buy every btc they could get. Before doing this, they got a legit mtgox account and placed buying orders at fkn low prices like usd 0.01. That way they were able to steal the usd from the hacked accounts.

I am fairly sure it was a real order. Some people are reporting getting existing low bids filled. It was one very very large sell order, new orders were not able to be placed until it finished executing.

Edit: On the subject of hacking, I had USD and BTC in my Mt.Gox account and neither was effected.

This is good for bitcoin. One person just sold off a bunch of coins, but many, many people just bought bitcoins, some at a great bargain (I saw one buy for 250000 or so coins at $0.01). Thus, the bitcoin net has just gotten wider... there are probably a few people who just got their first coins, and a lot of people just increased their coins. The ownership of bitcoin has just broadened greatly.

Edit: I retract this comment. It was actually a hack. http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=19551.0

If they were not legit trades this is not good. And the fact that the exchange can't handle the volume and is crashed is also not good. I think your perception of good is flawed. Perhaps you're more optimistic than me.....?

Yes, what makes no sense is that he is selling off 500k of btc's and HALF of this quantity for $0,01.

Why he didnt just dumped the market when it was on 30 or so?

It seems like an attack, this need investigation, is not only a huge sell of an early adopter.

It's a huge mess due to either bug or hacking, i am 100% sure it's not a real seller dumping 100k coins.  Usually in those cases the exchange will reverse the orders filled below the min level <$1-5, but who knows what mtgox will do since it's basically some guy in a basement...

I use tradehill, seems a bit slow now too but market data looked fine, see a dip to 13 due to the mtgox mess but nothing too crazy.  My pending limit buy order at $13 has not been filled.

your limited to withdrawing $1,000 worth of bitcoins a day

I've had success withdrawal more than that as long as I do multiple withdrawal requests. Each one spit back at my "limit reached" but I was able to do several successive withdrawals with no problems.

I can confirm from someone I know that bitcoins were indeed bought at the $0.01 price based on a standing bid that had been there. These coins were then transferred out of mtgox for obvious reasons and have showed up in the wallet, so they're real.

I guess any standing orders at the low prices were filled if they were "first in line at X price" and trade did occur, and the coins are real.

The question is, whose coins were sold at $0.01?

your limited to withdrawing $1,000 worth of bitcoins a day

I've had success withdrawal more than that as long as I do multiple withdrawal requests. Each one spit back at my "limit reached" but I was able to do several successive withdrawals with no problems.

wtf, if that's true, it puts GREAT confidence in mtgox' overall website security.

I think someone hacked mtgox,  selling all BTC from everyone's accounts
Yep, I think it's good time to sell after all

No, actually it's a good time to hold. But sell if you want, I'll add your underpriced coins to my collection ;)

No, it's a good time to remove all $ and Btc you have a mt Gox and hope it arrives at least. Trying to withdraw now, but it doesn't work... Not panicking though, probably just too many people trying to do the same.

I could move my coins I had
i had an open buy at $1 and it got filled.  made about $200k assuming bitcoins stay where they are around $10, crazy shit.  Should I transfer my coins to an external wallet?

Holy jesus, so people did make out. Can you verify that these are legit bitcoins that you can move out to an external wallet?

moving them now...

edit: no wait, mt gox is limiting my daily withdrawal

I call bullshit.

I couldn't withdraw my coins  I had from before, and now the the site is down... Let's see how they will solve this. Anybody know anything about the guys behind Mt gox? Are they bitcoin entusiasts or just in for a quick buck? That will probably determine how they handle this. If some people actually managed to buy for less than 5$ or even less then 1$, that means lots of sellers were robbed, just look at the charts from the other markets. How will they handle sells that went through? Especially problematic for those who, understanding it was a glitch, bought as much as possible and then withdrew it to their client. How will they handle that? Anybody managed to buy and withdraw? was it a hacker or a major bug perhaps triggered buy a huge real selloff?

I am asking myself why this hacker did't transfer BTC to his wallet and AFTER sell them slowly...

Thats true, he's smart enough to access a 500k account but didn't notice the withdrawal limit?

And why generate so much awareness dumping everything at the same time?

looks like the problem is much smaller than expected.  But it is interesting to know there are people keeping 100k+ worth of coins on mtgox. I really think they need to rethink this.

They probably freaked out at their success. Young and inexperienced. That's the scary part.
